Korean helicopter operator Moviation has placed a pre-order for 20 electric Vertical take-off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft from UK-based Sora Aviation.

Sora Aviation’s 30-seat S-1 eVTOL, which is expected to be ready to enter service in 2031, is being designed as an affordable air mobility solution that is accessible to everyone, according to its manufacturer.

In addition to the pre-order, which was announced on Monday 10 March, the two companies also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore use cases of the S-1 aircraft in South Korea initially for three key routes. These will include Jamsil Heliport (which is operated by Moviation) to Incheon Airport, Yeouido financial district to Incheon Airport and Jamsil Heliport to Sejong City, Korea’s planned administration capital.

Describing the S-1 as a game changer, Moviation CEO Min Shin said the eVTOL is aligned with South Korea’s plans to accelerate its transition to urban air mobility.

“It’s larger capacity and lower operating costs per passenger compared to helicopters and smaller eVTOLs make it an ideal fit for high-demand routes like Jamsil to Incheon,” he said.

Moviation’s plans are to integrate the S-1 into its existing helicopter operations, increasing passenger capacity while reducing per-seat costs.

South Korea presents a prime opportunity for eVTOL operations with dense urban areas and strong government support for urban air mobility. “We are thrilled to partner with Moviation to bring efficient, scalable eVTOL services to South Korea,” said Furqan, CEO of Sora Aviation. “The S-1 is designed not just for efficiency, but also to ensure that urban air mobility is truly accessible to more people – not just a luxury service.”

He added that Moviation’s pre-order for 20 of the aircraft “underscores the demand for higher capacity eVTOLs that can deliver equitable access to air mobility.”
