Canada’s largest hydroelectric provider, Hydro-Quebec, has ordered three ATR 72-600 turboprops, the first of which is due to be delivered in September 2025.

The three ATR72-600s are powered by twin Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT turboprops and will replace the current fleet of two DHC-8-300s and two DHC-8-400s. The aircraft are primarily used to shuttle staff around Quebec in order to keep its 62 electricity-generating sites running.

ATR explained the order by saying that: “Hydro-Quebec needs an affordable, reliable and low-emission solution to transport its employees across the province.”

ATR became the sole Western producer of large commercial passenger turboprops after de Havilland stopped producing the Dash 8-400 in 2022. ATR reports that demand for its turboprops is gaining momentum in Canada, with more than 50 ATRs now in service across Canada.
