Airbus Helicopters’ H125 has been granted single pilot instrument flight rules (IFR) capability by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), paving the way for deliveries of IFR capable H125s from the OEMs assembly line in Columbus, Mississipi in 2025.

Developed in collaboration with Moog’s Genesys Aerosystems, the new feature consists of an upgraded cockpit, a new autopilot along with redundant hydraulic and electrical systems.

With IFR capabilities, pilots can operate the H125 more safely in low visibility and challenging weather conditions, benefitting from advanced avionics and autopilot functions. The system enhances situational awareness and reduces pilot workload while preserving the H125’s renowned power, safety, versatility and manoeuvrability – qualities that have solidified its position as the leading light single-engine helicopter.

Jérome Ronssin, Head of Light Helicopters Programme at Airbus Helicopters, noted that the addition of this functionality to a light single-engine, will enable pilots to perform “complex operations at a reduced operating cost.” He also explained the new IFR feature will “expand the helicopter’s mission capabilities in all weather conditions, especially for critical missions such as public services, and pilot training – missions that are in high demand worldwide and particularly in North America.”

Currently, more than 4,300 H125 helicopters operate globally in some of the most demanding conditions.
