New helicopter approach cuts Bengaluru arrival time from 12 minutes to four

Bengaluru’s HAL Airport has become the first in India to introduce an RNP CAT H approach, giving helicopters a dedicated satellite-guided arrival path and cutting approach times by around eight minutes.

Helicopter pilots flying into Bengaluru’s HAL Airport can now follow a satellite-guided flight path designed exclusively for rotorcraft, cutting approach time from around 12 minutes to four and marking what could become a turning point for helicopter operations in India.

HAL Airport has become the first airport in the country to operationalise a Required Navigation Performance Category H (RNP CAT H) approach procedure, a precision satellite-based navigation system tailored specifically for helicopters.

Developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), validated through flight trials by HAL test pilots and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the procedure is intended to improve access in poor weather while allowing helicopters to fly more efficient and predictable routes into one of India’s busiest rotorcraft hubs.

The milestone comes barely a month after India approved its first Point-in-Space (PinS) instrument approach procedure for helicopters at Undavalli Heliport in Andhra Pradesh, again in Southern India. While PinS procedures are designed primarily for heliports without conventional instrument infrastructure, the new RNP CAT H procedure at HAL Airport is the country’s first such system operationalised at an airport environment shared by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

Built around how helicopters actually fly

Unlike conventional instrument approaches, which were largely developed around the performance of fixed-wing aircraft, CAT H procedures are designed specifically for helicopters.

Rotorcraft can slow rapidly, fly steeper approach profiles and operate safely at lower speeds than aeroplanes. Dedicated CAT H procedures allow those capabilities to be used while maintaining accurate navigation and safe separation from terrain, buildings and other aircraft. International guidance recognises that helicopter-only procedures can take advantage of these unique flight characteristics rather than requiring rotorcraft to follow approaches designed for conventional aircraft.

The new procedure uses satellite navigation to guide helicopters along precise three-dimensional flight paths. Instead of relying solely on conventional ground-based navigation aids, crews can follow highly accurate routes that have been optimised for helicopter operations around terrain and urban obstacles.

For pilots, the change is more than simply flying a different arrival route. It introduces a more predictable approach profile that can support operations in weather conditions where visual flying alone may not always be practical.

Why eight minutes matter

The headline figure is simple. A helicopter that previously required about 12 minutes to complete its arrival can now complete the approach in roughly four. Those eight minutes are not merely a scheduling improvement.

For emergency medical flights carrying critically ill patients, search and rescue missions, disaster response operations or urgent government flights, reducing the time spent flying an approach can improve operational responsiveness while reducing workload during one of the busiest phases of flight.

The shorter routing also means helicopters spend less time manoeuvring in congested airspace. More direct approaches can reduce unnecessary track miles, fuel consumption and the amount of time aircraft remain over densely populated areas, helping to lower the overall noise footprint. Rather than introducing a new helicopter, the technology makes better use of the aircraft already flying.

A national effort

The new capability represents a collaborative effort across India’s aviation sector. The Airports Authority of India developed the procedure, HAL test pilots carried out the validation flights and DGCA granted the operational approval following successful trials.

This capability enhances the safety, efficiency and accessibility of helicopter operations and establishes a benchmark for similar procedures to be implemented at airports across the country.”

The procedure has also been designed to integrate helicopter traffic more efficiently with fixed-wing operations, an increasingly important consideration as airspace becomes busier.

Why HAL Airport was the right place

HAL Airport is one of India’s busiest helicopter centres, handling around 50 helicopter movements every day alongside flight-testing, defence and fixed-wing activity.

That made it a natural location for introducing a procedure that requires helicopters and conventional aircraft to share the same controlled airspace safely and efficiently.

Instead of treating helicopters as aircraft that simply adapt to procedures created for aeroplanes, the RNP CAT H system gives rotorcraft a dedicated arrival profile based on how they actually operate.

The approach also offers greater flexibility for missions where helicopters often fly into complex operating environments, including emergency medical services, disaster relief, offshore support and search and rescue.

Part of India’s wider navigation modernisation

The launch also reflects India’s broader transition towards Performance-Based Navigation (PBN), where satellite navigation increasingly replaces dependence on ground-based navigation aids.

Required Navigation Performance procedures define how accurately an aircraft must navigate along a published flight path, allowing aircraft equipped with modern navigation systems to fly more precise routes than was previously possible. AAI has been steadily expanding PBN capability across the country’s airspace as part of its long-term air navigation modernisation programme.

For helicopters, however, the challenge has always been different.

While fixed-wing aircraft generally follow long, stable approaches to runways, helicopters often operate into constrained environments where flexibility, lower speeds and steeper flight paths are part of normal operations.

International standards have therefore evolved to include procedures specifically developed for rotorcraft rather than adapting those created for aeroplanes.

HAL Airport’s new RNP CAT H procedure may have been introduced at a single airport, but its significance extends beyond Bengaluru. As India expands helicopter services for emergency medical care, disaster response, offshore operations and regional connectivity, dedicated satellite-guided approaches designed specifically for rotorcraft could become an increasingly familiar feature of the country’s aviation infrastructure.
