Maiden flight for China’s hybrid-powered YH-1000S cargo UAV

Yesterday, Chinese state-run media reported the YH-1000S hybrid-powered unmanned transport aircraft had completed its maiden flight. The flight took place on Sunday in China’s Chongqing Municipality. The aircraft has a payload capacity of at least 1.2 tonnes and is part of a much larger wave of Chinese cargo drones being developed.
China flies large, improved YH-1000S cargo drone
The twin-engined YH-1000S was developed by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA) and is a new iteration of the YH-1000 transport drone first flown in May 2025. It is equipped with mission-proven avionics from the CH drone series.

China’s CGTN reported, “The YH-1000S is equipped with a high-power hybrid propulsion system, which significantly shortens takeoff and landing distance while improving payload capacity and flight range.”
The aircraft targets the low-altitude economy and unmanned logistics sector, a sector of aviation that China is aggressively pursuing to develop and exploit.
According to CGTN, the aircraft is a large autonomous transport aircraft expected to fill a role in international logistics delivery, emergency rescue and disaster relief, weather modification operations, ocean monitoring, and maritime supervision.

The publication also reported that the aircraft represents an innovation in cross-sector integration between China’s unmanned aviation and automotive industries. It says this helps to substantially reduce drone development and manufacturing costs.
Separately, France is also pairing its drone companies with established industrial companies (like Renault) to mass-produce military drones and bring down costs.
Intended role of the CAAA YH-1000S
According to earlier Chinese reporting, the YH-1000 cargo drone is designed for medium-altitude uncrewed cargo transportation. It is intended to be able to operate in harsh environments, including on secondary roads, compacted dirt runways, and grassy fields.

There is also the option to fit it with float kits so that it can perform water landings, while ski kits allow it to land on snowy terrain.
The YH-1000 features a classic cargo aircraft layout, capable of carrying four one-cubic-metre cargo pallets. It has the capability to load and unload cargo from its front and to drop cargo from its belly.
Potential applications include commercial operations, logistics, and emergency rescue.
In 2024, promotional videos from CAAA showed the YH-1000 being pitched to the military as well as commercial and government operators. The renderings showed it airdropping cargo loads and precision-guided munitions against land targets from a weapons bay in its lower fuselage.

Improving on the YH-1000
While Chinese media didn’t report the specs and capabilities of the YH-1000S, China Xinhua did say it comes with short takeoff and landing distances, an increased payload capacity, and extended flight ranges compared with last year’s YH-1000.

Last year, China’s Global Times reported that the medium-to-larger YH-1000 performed a test flight carrying 400 kilograms of cargo. That flight was carried out on a 134-kilometre route and crossed five mountain peaks over 1,000 metres in altitude.
The previous YH-1000 is designed for a range of 1,500 kilometres, an endurance of 10 hours, a service ceiling of 8,000 metres, and a payload capacity of 1,200 kilograms.
According to Chinese media, the YH-1000 project was initiated in June 2024, with ground taxi tests starting in January 2025, and the first flight in May 2025.

While impressive, China has also been developing the much larger Air White Whale W5000 with a payload capacity of 5,000 kilograms and a 2,600-kilometre range (depending on the payload).
