Mönchengladbach Airport has become the first facility in Germany to offer a constant supply of SAF, with the 35% blend now available “throughout the day” hailed as a significant step towards helping decarbonise regional aviation.

Describing the airport’s adoption of SAF as “groundbreaking,” Oliver Krischer, minister for the environment, nature conservation and transport for the State of North-Rhine Westphalia, added: “This is an important step towards making flying more climate-friendly”.

Refuelling will be performed by local company Rheinland Air Service, with the HEFA-produced SAF (utilising animal fats and used cooking oils) provided by TotalEnergies. Although SAF is already offered at other airports in Germany, none do so continuously.

“The permanent availability of SAF at MGL underlines the claim of the airport company and RAS to actively shape more sustainable aviation. In this way, as the ‘first mover’ of the German aviation industry, we can create the conditions for the new regional aviation at MGL,” commented Andreas Ungar, managing director of Flughafengesellschaft Mönchengladbach.

Mönchengladbach Airport handles almost 50,000 flight movements per year, including the regional aircraft and business jets that travel from around the world to undergo maintenance at the location. “The vision of the MGL… goes far beyond the traditional role of an airport. The airport company strives to actively design and implement new and sustainable processes in aviation,” said a spokesperson for the facility.
