GA-ATS launches Do228 NXT global outreach at Singapore Airshow

Singapore Airshow 2026 is shaping up to be a milestone moment for the reborn Dornier 228 programme.

General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS), the German OEM behind the Do228 NXT, is using Asia’s largest aviation show as the opening stop of an ambitious international trade fair tour, timed deliberately to coincide with the final assembly of the first next-generation aircraft.

For observers tracking developments across the static lines and chalets in Singapore, the message from Oberpfaffenhofen is clear: after several years of rebuilding the programme, the Do228 NXT is moving decisively from revival to market engagement.

Why 2026 matters for GA-ATS and the Do228 NXT

2026 is a pivotal year for GA-ATS. Series production of the Do228 NXT is now underway in Germany, with the first aircraft in the final stages of assembly and scheduled to be officially presented later this year.

Two aircraft are currently in final assembly, with completion expected in the spring, after which deliveries will follow.

Rather than waiting for the first roll-out, GA-ATS has chosen to step onto the international stage early. Singapore Airshow, running from 3 to 8 February, marks the first of six major trade fair appearances planned for this spring alone, followed by events in Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Austria, Chile and Germany.

“Our company, General Atomics AeroTec Systems, will start an international trade fair tour, not the aircraft,” Alexander Vogl, marketing manager at GA-ATS, told AGN. “The tour refers to six trade fair participations this spring. The first Do228 NXT aircraft is also in the final steps of assembly and will be officially presented later this year.”

That first airframe will play a central role once completed. According to Vogl, it will serve as a demonstrator for customer engagements and trade fairs, while also acting as a test platform for further developments, an important signal that the programme is designed to evolve with operator needs.

Why Singapore Airshow is central to GA-ATS’s Do228 NXT strategy

Choosing Singapore as the launch point for the tour is no accident. Southeast Asia remains one of the most natural operating environments for the Do228 family, and GA-ATS is leaning heavily on that legacy.

The aircraft has been operated across Asia for decades by civil and government users, from Japan and Nepal to Thailand and Bangladesh. In hot, humid conditions, from coastal patrols to island-hopping missions, the platform has earned a reputation for reliability and low operating costs, attributes that resonate strongly in the region.

GA-ATS sees those fundamentals carrying over directly into the NXT variant. The Do228 NXT builds on the proven airframe while introducing a modernised cockpit, a renewed supply chain and increased in-house production of key components, all aimed at improving availability and long-term support.

For Southeast Asian operators facing vast coastlines, archipelagic geography and limited infrastructure, the aircraft’s short take-off and landing (STOL) performance remains a core selling point. Certified to operate from short and unpaved runways, the Do228 NXT can access locations that are simply out of reach for larger turboprops or jets.

How the Do228 NXT fits Asia-Pacific mission requirements

What makes the Do228 NXT particularly relevant at Singapore Airshow is the breadth of missions it can cover, often with a single, reconfigurable platform.

Typical mission profiles in Asia include maritime patrol and surveillance, coast guard and exclusive economic zone monitoring, search and rescue, border protection and environmental monitoring.

The aircraft’s rectangular, unpressurised cabin simplifies sensor integration, allowing operators to tailor configurations for radar, electro-optical systems and mission consoles without extensive redesign.

The same airframe can also be reconfigured for transport and logistics, carrying up to 19 passengers or more than two tonnes of cargo, or adapted for medical evacuation, paratrooper deployment and research missions.

With optional wet-wing tanks, endurance can extend beyond ten hours, a critical factor for long maritime sorties and surveillance tasks.

GA-ATS argues that this flexibility, combined with low fuel consumption and maintenance costs, makes the Do228 NXT particularly attractive for governments and agencies seeking multi-role capability without operating large fleets of specialised aircraft.

From Dornier heritage to modern GA-ATS production

The Do228 NXT also represents a broader industrial story. Since taking over the programme in 2021, GA-ATS has modernised the production line at Oberpfaffenhofen, expanded in-house manufacturing and strengthened its supplier base to ensure long-term availability.

More than 40 years of continuous Do228 manufacturing and support underpin the NXT programme, giving GA-ATS a depth of type knowledge that few OEMs can match.

That experience extends beyond production to lifecycle support, with the company offering MRO services, upgrades, pilot training and simulator facilities from a single location in Germany.

For existing Do228 operators, this continuity is a major factor. The NXT is positioned not as a clean-sheet replacement, but as an evolution that preserves the aircraft’s strengths while aligning it with modern certification, avionics and support expectations.

GA-ATS takes a low-key approach at Singapore Airshow

Unlike some of the headline-grabbing debuts at Singapore Airshow, GA-ATS’s presence is deliberately measured.

There is no flying display and no prototype on the tarmac, yet. Instead, the focus is on conversations with government agencies, coast guards, special-mission operators and regional airlines weighing their next fleet decisions.

By starting its international tour in Singapore, GA-ATS is signalling confidence that the Do228 NXT’s combination of heritage, modernisation and mission flexibility still has a strong place in the Asia-Pacific market.
