Why are airlines keeping older aircraft in service for longer?

For years, airlines planned to replace older aircraft with newer, more efficient models. Instead, many are keeping those aircraft flying for longer simply because there aren’t enough new planes, or new parts, arriving.

What started as a post-pandemic production slowdown has turned into a much bigger challenge for the aviation industry.

Airbus and Boeing are still facing delivery delays, while manufacturers and suppliers continue to deal with shortages of parts, skilled workers and the production capacity needed to build aircraft at the pace airlines need.

Why are aircraft delivery delays forcing airlines to keep older fleets?

Aircraft deliveries remain below the levels required to meet airline demand, leaving thousands of aircraft on order but unavailable for operators.

For airlines, waiting for new aircraft is no longer measured in months; in many cases, it is taking years.

As a result, carriers are changing their fleet strategies. Rather than retiring older aircraft when replacements arrive, many are investing in additional maintenance, cabin upgrades and refurbishment programmes to keep existing fleets flying safely.

New aircraft remain the preferred option because they offer better fuel efficiency, lower maintenance costs and improved passenger experience. However, delayed deliveries have left airlines with limited alternatives.

How are supply chain problems affecting aircraft production?

The shortage of new aircraft also reflects wider disruption across the aviation supply chain. Earlier this year, we reported on A350 delays due to Spirit AeroSystems supply issues as just one example.

Aircraft production depends on thousands of suppliers providing components including engines, avionics and advanced materials. Shortages of parts, workforce challenges and manufacturing bottlenecks have slowed production across the industry.

Engine availability has also become a significant issue, with some airlines facing longer maintenance turnaround times and reduced aircraft availability.

How are airlines keeping aging aircraft in service?

Older aircraft are less efficient than the latest generation models, but they are still essential during a period of strong travel demand and limited capacity.

Airlines are extending aircraft lifespans through heavy maintenance checks, structural inspections, cabin modernisation and technology upgrades. Aircraft that were once expected to leave fleets are now remaining in service for several additional years.

However, ageing fleets come with higher maintenance costs, more reliance on spare parts and increased fuel consumption compared with newer aircraft.

For airlines, keeping older aircraft flying has become a necessity rather than a choice.

What impact is this having on airline operations and growth?

Aircraft shortages are affecting airline plans worldwide. Some carriers have delayed new routes, reduced flight frequencies or postponed expansion because additional aircraft have not arrived as expected.

The limited availability of aircraft has also increased leasing costs, as airlines compete for capacity from a smaller pool of available planes.

For passengers, this can mean fewer schedule options. For airlines, it means managing rising demand with fewer resources.

How do older aircraft affect aviation’s net zero targets?

The biggest concern surrounding delayed aircraft deliveries is their impact on aviation’s climate ambitions.

Fleet replacement remains one of aviation’s most important tools for reducing carbon emissions. Alongside sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), operational improvements and future technologies, newer aircraft are expected to play a key role in achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

How long will airlines keep older aircraft in service?

The aviation industry is already working to increase SAF production, improve efficiency and develop future technologies. However, without enough new aircraft entering service, reducing emissions becomes more difficult.

Airlines are not abandoning their sustainability goals; they are managing a situation where one of the most effective short-term solutions – that is, replacing older aircraft – is being delayed.

Manufacturers are working to increase production, but supply chain pressures are expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Until aircraft availability improves, airlines will continue relying on older fleets to maintain operations.

Extending aircraft lifespans is helping the industry manage today’s challenges, but it’s something of a sticking plaster solution to a much larger problem.
