KLM Catering Services first to introduce 100% electric trucks
KLM Catering Services (KCS) has introduced two fully electric and refrigerated catering trucks, a world-first initiative aimed at reducing emissions on the ground.
The move aligns with KLM’s broader goal of achieving emission-free ground operations by 2030.
Powered entirely by electricity, including their cooling systems, these trucks bring both environmental and operational benefits.
Alongside zero emissions, the vehicles operate much more quietly than their conventional counterparts, improving the working environment for KCS drivers and airport personnel.
KCS partnered with equipment manufacturers DOLL and Mallaghan to develop the prototypes, while Volvo provided the chassis.
The trucks will undergo rigorous testing to evaluate their performance, efficiency, and user-friendliness within KCS’s daily catering operations. Insights from the trial will help optimise the design and ensure seamless integration into airport workflows.
Michiel van der Eijk, CEO KLM Catering Services, said: “At KLM Catering Services, we like to be at the forefront of testing the latest technologies.
“I am therefore proud that we are the first airline caterer in the world with two 100% electric catering trucks.
“It is fantastic that our team will be testing these electric trucks in the coming period.”
