SITA rolls-out biometric airport tech across India
SITA has partnered with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to implement its biometric SmartPath technology across nine Indian airports.
This move is part of the larger DigiYatra initiative, a project led by India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation aimed at digitising air travel.
The collaboration will see the introduction of SITA’s contactless biometric systems, including SmartPath and Passenger Flow Management (PFM) solutions.
The idea is to enable passengers to enjoy a more seamless, and paperless, journey by integrating facial recognition at key touchpoints, reducing queues and wait times, and enhancing overall airport efficiency.
Biometric technology is revolutionising airports worldwide by enhancing security, efficiency, and the passenger experience.
Airports in countries like the US, UK, India, and the UAE have implemented facial recognition and fingerprint scanning at key points, such as check-in, security, and boarding gates.
By using unique biometric data, airports can ensure faster identification, minimise paperwork, and improve security, though the technology has opponents who have raised concerns over the use of personal data.
SITA’s technology rollout supports AAI’s mission to modernise Indian airports, with DigiYatra heralded as a “game-changer” for the aviation sector.
Sumesh Patel, President, APAC, SITA said: “With a focus on delivering digital travel, improving airport efficiency, and future-proofing operations with smart, agile solutions, India has a unique opportunity to revolutionise its airports with truly world-class infrastructure.
“It is vital in this connected era that travel across the globe is as seamless as possible and we are ready to help India continue to innovate in their digitalization efforts with SITA technology as the DigiYatra initiative spreads across India.”
In 2023, more than 20 million passengers benefited from DigiYatra, and its expansion to 28 airports is expected to cover 90% of India’s domestic air travellers. The scheme aligns with global standards, aiming for interoperability with IATA’s One-ID initiative, enhancing the international travel experience.
SITA’s collaboration with AAI forms part of a broader agreement announced in July 2023, which will see the deployment of advanced technology at 43 major Indian airports, impacting over 2,700 passenger touchpoints. SITA, a long-term partner of the Indian government since 1952, remains committed to the “Make in India” initiative, strengthening its presence in line with the country’s development goals.
