The vice president of Malawi Saulos Klaus Chilima has lost his life in an aeroplane crash, the Office of the President and Cabinet has confirmed, with the recovery of a missing Malawi Defense Force Aircraft confirming the loss of ten individuals on board,

A search and rescue mission to locate the Dornier Do228 was initiated on 10 June after the aircraft lost radar contact. The wreckage was subsequently found in the Chikanagawa forest.

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera “has been informed of the tragic outcome and has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the Vice President and all those who have lost their lives in this tragic accident,” confirmed Colleen Zamba, secretary to the president and cabinet. A national day of mourning has also been declared.
