Jet set go: American’s new 787-9 takes off

American Airlines has rolled out its newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, taking to the skies for the first time on a commercial service between Chicago O’Hare and Los Angeles International Airport.
The aircraft, the first in the carrier’s fleet to showcase its updated premium-heavy configuration, marks a significant step in American’s fleet renewal and customer experience strategy.
The inaugural service, Flight 2012, carried over 200 passengers and came complete with commemorative gift bags featuring exclusive memorabilia, including a special-edition flight tag created to mark the aircraft’s debut.
“We’re excited that you are part of the beginning of this plane’s journey,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, in a welcome note to passengers.
“Everything you see on board today was designed with you in mind: from the design details to Bluetooth connectivity to state-of-the-art entertainment, your comfort is our priority.”

American’s latest 787-9 Dreamliner features 51 Flagship Suite seats, offering chaise lounges, wireless charging, USB-C and AC power, and upgraded dining and amenity options.
Premium Economy sees a refreshed cabin with 32 upgraded seats, enhanced footrests, headrest wings for added privacy, and modern connectivity. Even the economy cabin benefits from 4K screens, Bluetooth capability and upgraded power outlets.
What does American’s summer schedule look like?
The aircraft’s arrival coincides with a busy summer launch of new international routes.
On 5 June, American adds flights from Miami to Rome, Dallas to Venice, and Charlotte to Athens.
This follows earlier summer launches including service from Chicago to Naples and Madrid, and from Philadelphia to Edinburgh and Milan.
With four daily flights to Greece, American says it will offer more US gateways to the country than any other airline.
