The German Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg) has received its third and final A350 aircraft from Lufthansa Technik, which has been put into service with registration 10+03.
The cabin refurbishments of the three widebody aircraft comprise the largest modernisation programme in the history of the Special Air Mission Wing, described as a “Herculean task” by Soeren Stark, chief executive officer of Lufthansa Technik. All refurbishments were also delivered within the estimated cost and time frame.
After the initial decision was made to retire the German Air Force’s two A340s (used for political and parliamentary air transport), 10+03 was initially supplied with an interim cabin, with the first A350s with a full government cabin following in November 2022. This aircraft subsequently returned to Lufthansa Technik’s Hamburg VIP Completion Centre, where its retrofit was finally completed.
10+03 ‘Kurt Schumacher’s livery has also been updated with the co-ordinating livery of its two sister aircraft, ‘Konrad Aenauer’ and ‘Theodor Heuss,’ with “only a few accents in the interior, individual reminiscences of the respective namesakes,” distinguishing the platforms.
