General Atomics AeroTec Systems has secured the launch customer for its Do228 NXT turboprop, with an NGO handling humanitarian and special missions.

German aircraft manufacturer General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) has secured its first customer for the new Do228 NXT turboprop, an unnamed humanitarian organisation. The first aircraft will be delivered in early 2027.

The announcement follows the successful rollout and first flight of the Do228 NXT demonstrator.

Do228 NXT builds on the strengths of the Dornier 228 platform

Based on the original Dornier 228-200 passenger platform, the modernised Do228 NXT is designed for greater operational efficiency, performing in challenging environments where access, speed and dependability are critical.

The new aircraft introduces five-blade propellers, replacing the previous four blades, which reduce fuel burn and have a lower noise footprint. The Do228 NXT is also equipped with a glass cockpit and features an updated cabin interior design. Like the original Dornier 228, the aircraft can seat up to 19 passengers and can easily be converted from passenger service to cargo service.

Since taking over the Do228 programme in 2021, GA-ATS has invested in updating the Donier production facility at Oberhaffenhofen and expanding its in-house manufacturing capabilities.

The company says the Do228 NXT can serve a wide range of users, including humanitarian organisations, government agencies, parapublic operators and specialised transport missions.

GA-ATS has been approaching potential customers for the aircraft, with a debut at last year’s Dubai Airshow and a scheduled six-stop tour of major trade fairs this year, which launched at the Singapore Airshow. Southeast Asia has long been a strong market for the Dornier 228, supporting civil and government operations, with its short-takeoff capabilities, reliability and low operating costs as key advantages.

An undisclosed NGO will use Do228 NXT for humanitarian and special missions

The non-governmental organisation acquiring the aircraft, which requested anonymity for operational reasons, plans to use it on a broad range of humanitarian and special mission activities.

According to GA-ATS, the Do228 NXT will support search-and-rescue missions, medical evacuation, disaster relief, logistics and transport operations, environmental monitoring, reconnaissance and assessment flights, and aerial coordination during emergency response efforts.

The aircraft’s short take-off and landing capabilities will also enable operations from austere or remote airfields, allowing rapid deployment to affected regions and reliable performance in demanding environments.

“Every mission is about reaching people and places where support is urgently needed. The Do228 NXT will strengthen operational flexibility across a wide range of humanitarian scenarios and help us support communities more effectively when time matters most,” a representative of the NGO said in the company’s announcement.

GA-ATS will deliver the aircraft in a mission-ready configuration tailored to the customer’s requirements. While GA-ATS did not disclose specific onboard systems, the company said the aircraft will incorporate technologies designed to enhance situational awareness, communications, mission coordination and response capabilities.

“We are very pleased that the contracts for the first Do228 NXT have been signed and that the aircraft will be delivered to the launch customer in early 2027. This confirms that the decision to further develop the Do228 NXT and resume production was the right one,” said Florian Rohe, managing director of General Atomics AeroTec Systems.
