Costa Rica to get Eve eVTOLs for sustainable air taxi solution

The order will facilitate a new ecosystem of eVTOL aircraft linking airports and high-end resorts.

Eve Air Mobility has secured a deal for 50 of its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, to be operated by new entrant Aeros Electric Airlines as it establishes an advanced air mobility (AAM) presence in Costa Rica.

The order, revealed on Monday 30 June, will facilitate a new ecosystem of eVTOL aircraft linking airports and high-end resorts with journey lengths expected to range between 20 and 50 kilometres.

“With more than three million overseas tourists visiting the country each year – making it Central America’s most visited destination—the partners are targeting road congestion and long travel times with a faster, lower-emission alternative.” the group said.

The letter of intent for the sale of up to 50 of Eve’s eVTOLs includes access to the company’s integrated TechCare support package.

The deal comes less than two weeks after Eve announced a deal for 54 aircraft at the Paris Air Show.

Partnering with Bluenest for Caribbean connectivity

The three-party collaboration includes a tie-up with Bluenest, Globalvia’s Advanced Air Mobility unit, will take the lead on vertiport infrastructure, and Aerosolutions, which is launching Aeros Electric Airlines and will lead the introduction of the air taxi services.

“Joining forces with Aerosolutions and Bluenest by Globalvia allows us to accelerate the introduction of safe, sustainable, and efficient air mobility in Costa Rica,” said Johann Bordais, CEO of Eve Air Mobility.

“We’re eager to see our eVTOL transform travel in regions like Guanacaste, easing congestion and bolstering the nation’s leadership in ecotourism.”
Bluenest is already a major player in Costa Rican transport as the operator of the Ruta 27 highway.
Its role in the project will centre on integrating vertiports into the national transport network, enabling smooth connections between air and ground modes.

How eVTOLs will contribute to Costa Rica’s sustainable tourism push

The partners spoke warmly about the deal, noting that it promises faster, more efficient connectivity while also delivering on Costa Rica’s green agenda.

“By integrating our eVTOL aircraft and TechCare services into their operations, they can offer faster, more efficient, and more sustainable travel options, especially in areas where ground routes are congested or limited,” said Megha Bhatia, chief commercial officer at Eve Air Mobility. “It’s not just a smarter way to travel, it’s a bold leap into the future of connected, regional transportation.”

“Bluenest by Globalvia is committed to building the sustainable infrastructure of tomorrow, and our work in Costa Rica with Eve Air Mobility and Aerosolutions is a prime example to further progress in our collaboration with local entities,” says Bluenest managing director, Jose Ignacio Rodriguez. “These started in March 2024 where real vertiport and air taxi tests in Guanacaste (Liberia airport and Reserva Conchal) took place.”

Bluenest notes it is working to develop the vertiports of the future to enable safe and efficient eVTOL operations. It showcased its vertiport solution at Airspace World last May.

Eve’s eVTOL offering

Eve’s aircraft design uses a lift and cruise configuration, combining eight vertical lift rotors and a fixed-wing for cruise flight.

The aircraft includes a pusher prop powered by twin electric motors to provide added redundancy.

The programme is currently undergoing flight testing and prototype evaluation as it moves through its development phase.
