Investigators have recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the CRJ700 aircraft involved in a fatal crash near Washington’s Reagan National Airport (DCA).

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed the retrieval, which will aid in determining the cause of the accident.

“NTSB investigators recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the Bombardier CRJ700 airplane involved in yesterday’s mid-air collision at DCA. The recorders are at the NTSB labs for evaluation,” the agency said on X.

The crash involved a mid-air collision between the American Eagle Flight 5342 CRJ700 and a US Army Sikorsky H-60 helicopter.

Authorities are now analysing the recovered recorders and examining wreckage to understand the sequence of events leading up to the crash. The NTSB is expected to release preliminary findings in 30 days.

The Sikorsky’s recording devices will also be read either by the DoD or the NTSB. “We have a good starting with [the DoD], and we’ve already made agreements to be able to do that,” said the NTSB.

Flight operations at DCA remain impacted, with passengers advised to check with airlines for potential delays and cancellations.
