Rare USAF RC-135U Combat Sent spy plane lands in UK amid Iran tensions

The Combat Sent gathers detailed intelligence on foreign military radars, helping the US develop ways to detect and defeat them. Its latest flight has prompted speculation about a Middle East deployment.

One of the US Air Force’s two RC-135U Combat Sent reconnaissance aircraft has been tracked crossing the Atlantic toward the UK, drawing attention to a rare aircraft that helps American forces understand how an adversary’s air defences work.

The aircraft, serial number 64-14849, was identified by flight trackers using the callsign COBRA49 on 4 November. Its eastbound journey prompted suggestions that it could be heading toward the Middle East amid uncertainty over further US military action against Iran.

The aircraft has since landed at RAF Mildenhall in the UK, a well-used jumping-off point for US military flights to the Middle East. However, its onward deployment remains unknown for the time being.

Flight-tracking reports indicate that the aircraft left Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska on November 3 and stopped at Pease Air National Guard Base in New Hampshire before continuing across the Atlantic the following morning.

Open-source tracking from ADSBexchange shows the aircraft leaving Offutt at 23:45 on 3 November, arriving at Pease a couple of hours later. It departed Pease at 06:51 on 4 November and landed at RAF Mildenhall at 13:33.

The arrival of the aircraft in the UK doesn’t guarantee deployment to the CENTCOM area. However, British military bases were extensively used during Operation Midnight Hammer as a stopping point on the way to the Middle East.

What is the RC-135U Combat Sent?

The Combat Sent is a highly specialised electronic intelligence aircraft. The US Air Force lists just two in its inventory, both assigned to the 55th Wing at Offutt.

Its mission is to locate, identify, and examine radar emissions from foreign military systems on land, at sea and in the air. The information supports senior US decision-makers, military commanders and intelligence analysts.

The aircraft’s value lies in the detail it collects. Detecting a radar establishes that a system is transmitting; studying its signals helps analysts determine its operating characteristics and capabilities.

According to Air Combat Command, Combat Sent’s precision collection equipment can gather multiple signals of interest. This information feeds national databases and detailed technical analysis to support the development of equipment and techniques to detect, warn of or defeat foreign electronic systems.

Externally, distinctive antenna arrays around its chin, wingtips and extended tail help distinguish the RC-135U. Inside, its crew includes electronic warfare officers, airborne systems engineers and mission specialists. Aerial refuelling extends its reach beyond its published 4,000 nm range.

Does the Combat Sent flight signal further US strikes on Iran?

The movement comes amid renewed scrutiny of US military flights associated with the Middle East.

As Aerospace Global News reported earlier, C-17 transport flights to Israel and reports of diplomatic warnings have fueled speculation about a wider campaign against Iran following the November 3 midterm elections.

Those flights do not establish what cargo was aboard or whether an offensive has been authorised. Limited US strikes have already continued, making the question really about whether Washington will escalate to a more sustained campaign.

President Donald Trump has also played down the prospect of immediate escalation. In an interview with the Financial Times, he said the US had no immediate plans to strike Iran, while maintaining that American forces were “locked and loaded” if required.

Combat Sent would be a valuable intelligence asset wherever detailed knowledge of foreign radar systems is required. But the Air Force explicitly describes it as a platform used worldwide in both peacetime and contingency operations.

Its rarity makes the flight noteworthy. Its presence alone does not establish that another attack on Iran is approaching.
