Royal International Air Tattoo to move to Boscombe Down from 2027

Organisers have confirmed that the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) will relocate to MOD Boscombe Down in Wiltshire from 2027, ending a relationship with RAF Fairford that stretches back more than four decades.
The first edition at the new venue will take place from 16-18 July 2027.
Why is the Royal International Air Tattoo leaving RAF Fairford?
According to Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises (RAFCTE), the decision to relocate was taken following a review of the event’s future operating requirements.
The organisation said Boscombe Down will provide greater certainty for exhibitors, participating air forces, volunteers and visitors while helping protect the long-term future of the show.
“This decision follows a comprehensive review of the show’s future operating requirements and has been taken to protect, strengthen and secure the long-term future of RIAT,” an RAFCTE spokesperson said.
What does the move mean for airshow visitors?
The announcement marks one of the biggest changes in the event’s modern history. Since establishing itself at RAF Fairford, RIAT has grown into one of the most important fixtures on the global airshow calendar.
“Every generation of RIAT has had its defining moments, and I believe this is one of them,” said RAFCTE Chief Executive Gavin Gager.
“The decision to move RIAT to Boscombe Down is about much more than a new location. It is about securing the future of the world’s greatest military airshow and the charitable impact it generates for future generations.”

Boscombe Down’s airshow history
Although best known internationally as a centre for military flight testing and aircraft evaluation, Boscombe Down has previously hosted major aviation events. The airfield welcomed the Battle of Britain Airshow in 1990 and Air Tournament International in 1992, both organised by the Air Tattoo’s predecessor organisation.
Its aviation heritage made it a natural candidate as organisers evaluated options for the future of the event.
The Royal International Air Tattoo is also the main fundraising event for the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.
“What excites me most is not simply the move itself, but what it makes possible,” said Gager. “Every year RIAT brings people together through a shared passion for aviation, while generating vital funding that enables the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust to inspire hundreds of thousands of young people through STEM engagement.”
