Bomb threats on several flights in Europe today have seen aircraft searched and airports temporarily closed, with at least seven separate flights affected.

The incidents included a LOT Polish flight and a Ryanair flight, both from the UK; an SAS flight from Copenhagen; and at least two flights into Sofia, Bulgaria.

Separately, authorities searched two Ryanair flights upon landing in Rome Fiumicino, arriving from Dublin and Lisbon, following anonymous tips.

The incidents come one day after a Wizz Air flight from London Luton made an emergency landing in Budapest after a mid-flight bomb threat.

All aircraft landed safely, with no explosives found in the searches completed so far. Each alert nevertheless prompted a full security response. Authorities have not established a connection between the incidents or whether it is a coordinated campaign.

Two flights to Poland receive bomb threats

On the morning of 3 November, a LOT Polish flight departed London Heathrow for Warsaw just before 07:00. The Boeing 737 MAX, operating flight LOT286, was almost two hours into the journey when it received the bomb threat.

The flight immediately diverted, taking a sharp turn away from Warsaw’s main Chopin Airport and landing at the northern Warsaw-Modlin Airport instead.

Passengers were disembarked while security teams examined the aircraft. Modlin temporarily suspended operations while checks were carried out, but reopened a short while later.

At almost the same time, an SAS flight from Copenhagen to Warsaw landed at its destination and was immediately evacuated, having also received a bomb threat.

SAS confirmed the incident, sharing, “We can confirm that a threat has been made against flight SK751 between Copenhagen and Warsaw. The aircraft landed normally in Warsaw and the passengers have disembarked.”

Three Ryanair flights searched on landing

In Spain, a Ryanair flight from Manchester landed in Murcia safely at around 10:30, having received a threat of a bomb on board.

All 114 passengers and seven crew members were disembarked away from the terminal while the aircraft was inspected by security teams. No explosives were found.

Two further Ryanair aircraft were searched at Rome Fiumicino following an anonymous warning alleging explosives aboard services arriving from Lisbon and Dublin. At least one of the flights was escorted by fighter jets, according to reports.

The Lisbon flight landed at approximately 09:40 local time, followed by the Dublin service at 10:44. Police and bomb disposal specialists checked the aircraft, passengers and baggage.

No explosives were found.

Sofia reports at least two bomb scares

Bulgaria has reported several affected flights, including a Wizz Air flight from Bergamo to Sofia and another flight travelling from Dublin. Seperate reports have claimed an EL AL flight from Israel had also declared an emergency due to a bomb threat.

The incidents at Sofia come just a day after a Wizz Air flight from London Luton was forced to make an emergency landing in Budapest after receiving a bomb threat mid-flight. The Airbus A321 was escorted by fighter jets before landing safely in Hungary.

Authorities there “carried out the necessary security checks on the aircraft and passengers”, a spokesperson for Wizz Air said.

The airline later confirmed an inspection had been “completed and nothing was found”.
