Ethiopian partners with Safran for 777-9 seating

April 13, 2025

Ethiopian Airlines has entered into a new agreement with Safran to outfit its upcoming Boeing 777-9 aircraft with Z400 economy class seats.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg and covers eight aircraft scheduled for delivery in mid-2027.
Each aircraft will feature 383 economy seats. The Z400 model was selected for its suitability for long-haul operations and includes upgraded 13-inch inflight entertainment screens, replacing the current 11.6-inch versions. The seats are also 12.5% lighter than earlier models, thanks to a simplified structure and advanced materials aimed at improving fuel efficiency and sustainability.
“We are pleased to have signed this MoU with Safran for the provision of the Z400 seats for our 777-9 aircraft. As a technology driven airline, we are committed to enhancing our passengers’ onboard experience through state-of-the-art technology that offer passenger comfort while also ensuring operational efficiency and sustainability,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew.
Victoria Foy, CEO of Safran Seats, added: “We are delighted to deepen our partnership with Ethiopian Airlines by providing our advanced Z400 seats for their B777-9 fleet. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence in passenger comfort, supporting Ethiopian Airlines as it expands its horizons and enhances its inflight services.”
