Vietjet operates first commercial SAF flights in Vietnam
October 17, 2024
Low-cost carrier, Vietjet, has today successfully completed the first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) fuelled flights to depart from Vietnam.
The SAF was supplied by Petrolimex Aviation (the only fuel supplier to provide and refuel with SAF in the country). The flights departed from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City before flying to Melbourne in Australia and Incheon in South Korea.
The flights mark a “collective source of pride” for Dinh Viet Thang, director general, Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.
“Vietjet Air and Petrolimex Aviation have successfully conducted the first international flights using SAF being refuelled in Vietnam, clearly demonstrating their commitment to sustainable fuel usage,” he said.
Thang was joined by Vietjet CEO, Dinh Viet Phuong who added: “Today’s Vietjet flights using SAF are particularly meaningful, symbolising green flights and eco-friendly air travel, offering passengers a wonderful, environmentally conscious flying experience, especially on international routes.”
Produced from renewable sources including used cooking oil, agricultural residues and municipal waste, SAF is considered key to reducing carbon emissions in line with the industry’s collective target of net zero emissions by 2050.
Alongside efforts to research, develop and use SAF, other initiatives adopted by Vietjet to reduce emissions include its transition from paper to electronic tickets, the use of eco-friendly, recyclable materials onboard and fuel-saving progammes.
