Mexicana has taken delivery of a new E195-E2 aircraft, the first of Embraer’s next-generation regional jets to be placed with the airline and the first to operate with a Mexican carrier.

The aircraft departed from Embraer’s São José dos Campos facility in Brazil for Mexico, where it will begin operations as part of the national carrier’s push to boost domestic connectivity.

“We are proud to deliver the first E2 to Mexicana and support the airline’s mission to connect more communities across Mexico with greater efficiency and comfort,” said Arjan Meijer, president and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation.

“The E2 is the most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft in the world, and it’s ideally suited to Mexicana’s network and sustainability goals.”

Mexicana seeks boost for regional connectivity

The deal, confirmed in 2024, is part of a broader strategy to revitalise the state-owned airline and improve regional air services across the country.

Mexicana had been due to receive the first of the aircraft in May 2025. The reason for the delay was not made public.

“This delivery marks a new chapter for Mexicana,” said Leobardo Bojórquez, CEO of Mexicana.

“The E2’s performance, economics, and passenger appeal make it the perfect aircraft to support our growth strategy. We are excited to bring this new level of service and efficiency to our customers.”

Mexicana will operate the E2 aircraft in a single-class configuration and plans to deploy it beyond its Mexico City base to secondary airports such as Tulum and Tijuana.

Bojórquez added: “With every flight we currently operate and will operate in the future using Embraer E2 family aircraft, we not only transport passengers, but we also create opportunities, connect families and friends, and promote culture and talent in each region with which we operate and will operate in the near future.”
