Japan Airlines launches drone photography arm

April 2, 2025

JTB and Japan Airlines are collaborating to introduce SKYPIX, Japan’s first automated unmanned aerial photography service utilising AI-powered video editing.
Designed to enhance the appeal of tourist destinations, the service is being demonstrated from March 1 to May 6 in Kankakei, Shodoshima, in Kagawa Prefecture, with an official launch scheduled for August 1, 2025.
Despite boasting breathtaking scenery, many tourist locations struggle to generate sustainable revenue. SKYPIX is an initiative aimed at transforming these destinations into revenue-generating attractions.
The three companies have jointly applied for a business model patent and will continue working together to develop innovative tourism content and promote regional travel.
SKYPIX offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience aerial photography without requiring specialised skills or equipment.
By simply scanning a QR code at a designated site and making a payment, customers can activate an autonomous drone that captures aerial footage of both the surrounding landscape and the individual.
The AI-powered system then automatically edits the footage to create a high-quality video, which is delivered to the customer without the need for an app download.
The service is available in multiple languages, including English, Chinese, and Thai, ensuring accessibility for international visitors.
