Multiple flights diverted across Europe after fresh wave of bomb threats
4 min read
At least 14 passenger aircraft have been diverted or forced to make emergency landings across Europe today (5 November) following a new series of bomb threats targeting commercial flights.
Flights operated by Wizz Air, Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Finnair and LOT Polish Airlines were among those affected, with incidents reported in France, Bulgaria, Belgium and Italy.
The latest alerts follow a series of similar threats earlier this week, which disrupted at least seven flights across Europe.
Former Air Traffic Controller Michele Robson told Sky News: “In my entire career I never saw anything like this.
“The fact a number of aircraft have been grounded during the reports means these threats do have a lot of credibility.”
Aer Lingus Airbus A320 diverted to French military airbase
The first incident today affected Aer Lingus Airbus A320 operating flight EI402 from Dublin to Rome. The plane was diverted to Évreux military airbase, approximately 100km west of Paris, after a bomb threat was reported.
France’s air force dispatched military aircraft to escort the passenger jet, which landed safely at the base.
Later reports stated that all 151 passengers and six crew members were safe, while military bomb-disposal teams examined the aircraft.
Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the aircraft turning away from its intended route near Paris before circling over the Évreux area.

Ryanair flights affected as bomb threats spread across Europe
Three Ryanair flights bound for Bulgaria were also affected by bomb threats on Thursday.
Services from Copenhagen and Madrid landed safely at Sofia Airport, while a flight from London Stansted was diverted to Plovdiv Airport.
In Italy, a Finnair flight travelling from Helsinki to Rome was escorted by Italian military aircraft before landing safely at its intended destination.
A spokesperson told the Mirror: “We can confirm that two Finnair flights, AY1761 from Helsinki to Rome and AY1471 from Helsinki to Vienna (operated by Jettime), have faced unfounded or hoax bomb threats today, 5 November.
“Both flights landed safely at their destinations, and customers have disembarked the aircraft.”
A LOT Polish Airlines aircraft was also reported to have landed at Brussels Airport following a bomb alert.

Wizz Air flights targeted by bomb threats
Two Wizz Air flights were also affected by bomb threats on Thursday.
Flight W46387 from Milan to Warsaw was diverted to Vienna after a threat was received during the flight.
A spokesperson for the airline said: “Wizz Air confirms that today’s Milan Malpensa–Bucharest Otopeni flight was subject to a bomb threat, which was communicated to the airline.
“As the aircraft was already approaching its final destination, no diversion was necessary, and the flight landed safely at Bucharest Otopeni Airport.
“The aircraft is currently on the ground at Bucharest Otopeni Airport, where the relevant airport authorities are conducting security inspections in accordance with established security protocols and procedures. These checks are still ongoing.”
A second Wizz Air flight travelling from Milan to Bucharest landed safely at Henri Coanda International Airport, were 182 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated.
The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) said a “crisis cell” was established at the airport in Bucharest. Bomb disposal experts are reportedly checking the aircraft.

Latest incidents follow seven bomb threats earlier this week
Thursday’s disruption follows a series of threats on Tuesday, 3 November, when at least seven flights across Europe were targeted.
Those incidents affected aircraft operated by Ryanair, Wizz Air, SAS and LOT Polish Airlines, including flights departing from London Heathrow and Manchester.
A LOT Boeing 737 MAX travelling from Heathrow to Warsaw was diverted to Warsaw Modlin Airport, which temporarily closed while security checks were carried out.
A Ryanair flight from Manchester to Murcia was also met by emergency services after receiving a bomb threat.
Authorities subsequently confirmed that no explosive devices had been found in connection with Tuesday’s alerts.
On Monday, a Wizz Air Airbus A321neo flying from London Luton to Sofia was diverted to Budapest following a separate threat. Hungarian Gripen fighter jets were scrambled to escort the aircraft.
Authorities investigate repeated European aviation security alerts
Authorities have not established whether the latest threats are connected or identified those responsible.
While earlier incidents were confirmed as false alarms, investigations into Thursday’s threats are continuing.
