Finnair celebrates 70 years of flights between London and Helsinki
Finnair celebrated 70 years of flights between London and Helsinki last week, having operated its first-ever service between the two cities in 1954.
The Nordic airline’s inaugural flight departed Helsinki on 1 September 1954, flying to Copenhagen and on to Dusseldorf, before finally arriving in London Airport – now known as Heathrow – over eight hours later; compared to just three hours today.
Finnair’s new connection was initially priced at 55,200 Finnish Marks, approximately £1,900 in today’s money and was operated by a Convair 340/440 Metropolitan, capable of carrying 44 customers.
The route’s inception back in September 1954 also coincided with another of transport’s greatest achievements, the launch of the iconic London Routemaster bus, meaning Finnair’s customers could also ‘fly’ around the iconic capital upon touchdown.
Today, the London to Helsinki route remains integral to Finnair’s network, with the airline having just announced a 50% increase in flights on the route, starting from 27 October 2024. With this, Finnair will now offer British customers six daily flights between the two capitals, showing its commitment to the UK market.
In contrast to the route’s original Convair 340/440 Metropolitan aircraft, customers now benefit from flights operated by a mix of the airline’s Airbus fleet, including widebody A350s and A330s featuring lie-flat Business Class seats and inflight entertainment.
To mark the platinum anniversary, customers travelling between Heathrow and Helsinki were treated to gifts, including traditional liquorice allsorts – one of the most well-known sweets in Finland – highlighting the strong bond and the good taste of both the Finns and the Brits.
