China Airlines debuts new premium economy with wings on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
China Airlines has unveiled its new premium economy cabin, which will launch on the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline will introduce a new design aesthetic on this aeroplane, dubbed ‘Starlit Mountain City’, which the airline says is “based on Eastern aesthetics, creating a space that evokes Taiwan’s landscapes and warmth.”

China Airlines competes with premium economy innovator EVA Air on 787-9
The new China Airlines cabin aesthetic shares warm metallic tones with Starlux’s Airbus A350 cabins, though China Airlines is not competing with Starlux on this cabin.

Instead, the Taiwanese carrier is competing directly with EVA Air, the airline that originally created premium economy class in the 1990s and has since successfully evolved the product.

The new China Airlines Boeing 787-9 premium economy shares many features with EVA Airways’ new Boeing 787-9 premium economy.

- EVA Airways’ 787-9 premium economy cabin features 28 Recaro R5 cradle seats arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration. The images shared by China Airlines appear to show the same seat model and configuration.
- Each EVA Airways 787-9 premium economy seat features an adjustable headrest with a privacy wing, with built-in reading lights. China Airlines is also introducing privacy wings with built-in reading lights.
- EVA Airways seats feature an adjustable legrest. China Airlines appears to feature a similar legrest.
- EVA Airways’ premium economy has a small storage compartment in the seatback. It’s not clear from the images whether China Airlines has a similar storage compartment.
- EVA Airways seat dimensions
- Row pitch: 42″
- Seat width: 19.5″
- Seat recline: 6”
- China Airlines has not yet published its seat dimensions, though they may be on par, as the cabin density is identical (28 passengers) and the seat model appears to be the same.
- EVA Airways in-flight entertainment screens are 15.6” high-resolution widescreen monitors. China Airlines has not yet published its specifications, though the images appear to show similar screens.
- EVA Airways’ tray table includes a holder for personal devices. China Airlines’ images show a similar holder for personal devices on its tray table.
- EVA Airways seats are fitted with 110V AC and USB-A power outlets. China Airlines’ power supply specs have yet to be published.

Wings are the thing in premium economy now
With the rising popularity of premium economy, airlines will continue to find ways to differentiate their products, appealing to passengers by offering what they value most—greater privacy and better rest. Headrest wings provide an elegant solution to both, as they not only give passengers a greater sense of personal space but also provide a place to rest their heads.

Other carriers introducing wings in premium economy include:
- Air Canada’s new ‘Glowing Hearted’ Boeing 787-10 premium economy cabin
- British Airways’ new 787-9 World Traveller Plus cabin
- Cathay Pacific’s new, elevated Boeing 777-300ER premium economy class
- Qantas new premium economy seat for the A350-1000
If wings continue to catch on, perhaps they will stretch back. Etihad Airways has long offered headrest wings as a seat feature of its economy cabins as part of its more upscale passenger experience.
