Boeing (belatedly) celebrates Lạc Bird livery on Vietnam Airlines 787 Dreamliner

On 27 May, Boeing tweeted an image of what it called “a bold new Lạc Bird livery on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner,” to mark 30 years of operations by Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam’s national flag carrier. The airline represents a source of national pride, and a symbol of Vietnamese identity.

Boeing’s social media post read: “It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s both! Vietnam Airlines marks 30 years with a bold new Lạc Bird livery on the 787 Dreamliner —a symbol of Vietnamese tradition and global vision. Here’s to 30 years of flight and many more to come!”

In fact Vietnam Airlines officially introduced a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with a special livery featuring the chim Lac (Lac bird) in late April, in time to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the national flag carrier’s founding and ahead of Vietnam’s Reunification Day (30 April) and International Workers’ Day (1 May) holidays.

The chim Lac is a sacred symbol of Vietnamese culture with deep connections to the nation’s origins and embodying aspirations for growth, prosperity and longevity.

Dang Anh Tuan, Vietnam Airlines Deputy General Director said that the Lac bird embodies the pioneering spirit, the desire to conquer, and the will to continuously rise. He said that applying the symbol on a Boeing 787 showcased Vietnam Airlines’ aspirations to connect traditions with the future, and to carry the Vietnamese identity and cultural values across the world.

The Boeing 787-9 aircraft that wears the Lac bird livery will operate on key domestic and international routes, becoming an airborne ‘cultural ambassador’, that will help spread the image of a modern Vietnam with a rich cultural identity across five continents.

Over the past 30 years, Vietnam Airlines has transported hundreds of millions of passengers, travelling more than 3 billion kilometres and connecting Vietnam with more than 30 international destinations.
