Boeing 787 prices could soar under Trump tariff scenario, warns AerCap

Boeing's 787 aircraft could see a dramatic price hike of up to $40 million if Donald Trump's most severe tariff measures are implemented, according to AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly.

EVERETT, WASHINGTON, USA - JAN 26th, 2017: Brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner with no engines and paintinnnng waiting to be completed and for a successful test flight at Snohomish County Airport or Paine Field. An old Boeing 727 in the background.

Boeing’s 787 aircraft could see a dramatic price hike of up to $40 million if Donald Trump’s most severe tariff measures are implemented, according to AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly.

“In an absolute worst case scenario, say, a 25% increase across the board on tariffs, a tit-for-tat from both sides — a Boeing 787, the price will go up by $40 million,” Kelly stated during an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box. “No one’s going to want to pay that.”

Under such conditions, Kelly – who heads one of the world’s leading aircraft leasing company – believes that airlines would likely pivot towards Airbus, potentially allowing the European manufacturer to capture as much as 75% to 80% of the global market.

Despite Boeing facing a turbulent year, Kelly highlighted that AerCap – one of the largest buyers of aviation assets globally – has observed significant improvements in Boeing’s product quality, reliability, and safety.

“I have never had a hesitation about getting on a Boeing aircraft,” Kelly said. “Boeing has made tremendous steps in terms of quality, safety and reliability over the last year. We see it because we’re on the shop floor buying aeroplanes every day.”
