ANA develops fire-resistant bag for overheated batteries
December 3, 2024
Japanese airline ANA has partnered with Kikuchi Sheet Industries and TOPPAN Corporation to create a fire-resistant storage bag designed to protect passengers, crew, and aircraft from fires caused by overheating electronic device batteries.
These bags are now in use across ANA’s fleet, including AirJapan and ANA Wings flights.
The innovative design addresses a growing concern over lithium-ion battery safety following incidents of overheating and fires on other airlines. Developed in response to suggestions from ANA cabin crew, the bags provide a lightweight, compact solution suitable for quick deployment onboard aircraft.
The technology combines Kikuchi’s fire-resistant materials with TOPPAN’s “FSfilm,” a heat-activated fire-extinguishing aerosol.
Together, these components neutralise overheating devices, preventing fires and containing smoke. ANA plans to make the bags commercially available to other airlines and businesses from January 2025 via ANA Trading.
