Kazakhstan’s flag carrier, Air Astana, has broadened its international network with the launch of two new routes in two days. Direct services to Azerbaijan and Germany have been inaugurated in the last week, adding more connections for passengers.

Air Astana doubles down on flights to Germany

Air Astana operates flights to Frankfurt from Kazakhstan’s Astana International Airport (NZQ) and Manshuk Mametova International Airport (URA) in Uralsk, western Kazakhstan.

Now, it also has a non-stop link between Almaty and Frankfurt, launched on 1 June 2025. The service, operated by Airbus A321LR aircraft, offers flights every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

In all, the carrier has 11 weekly flights between Frankfurt and Kazakhstan. While there’s a good amount of point-to-point traffic, Air Astana is also keen to promote its connecting services onwards to other Asian destinations.

To support the new service, Air Astana has also updated its long-running codeshare agreement with Lufthansa to operate joint flights on the Almaty-Frankfurt route.

The airline also codeshares with Etihad, giving passengers access to Etihad flights to Mumbai, Riyadh, Dammam, Bahrain, Cairo, Doha, Kuwait City, and Muscat via Abu Dhabi.

Air Astana inaugurates a new connection to Azerbaijan

The airline inaugurated a new service between Atyrau, in Kazakhstan’s oil-rich west, and the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, on 31 May 2025. Operated with Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, the route runs three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

The first passengers were greeted by Ambassador Alim Bayel, representatives of Air Astana, and officials from Baku Airport.

This summer, the market between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan will reach 34 flights per week. From Baku, passengers are directly connected with Astana, Almaty and Aktau, with Atyrau the latest addition.

“We are pleased to see the growing number of flights and expanding geography of routes between our countries,” says Bayel, as reported by Caliber. “We are increasing the number of permitted flights to 70. This means the growth will continue.”

Air Astana’s international expansion

The airline’s summer schedule is reflective of its ambitions in the international market. Summer 2025 sees the addition of several new destinations, including Guangzhou, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Mumbai.

Flight frequencies have increased to destinations including Turkey and Tbilisi, while seasonal flights to Podgorica, Batumi and Bodrum all reopen this month.

As of 31 December 2024, the Group’s passenger network covered 107 routes (74 international and 33 domestic), with 45 destinations in 22 countries.

International remains a strong focus for Air Astana, particularly since it has embarked on installing a third fuel tank in its A321LR aircraft. These modifications have brought new destinations within this extended range, including London and, from 2026, Tokyo.
