STARLUX gives the inflight safety briefing a futuristic makeover with AIRSORAYAMA Sexy Robot
STARLUX Airlines has unveiled a visually striking new inflight safety video for its AIRSORAYAMA-themed Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, with Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama’s iconic Sexy Robot as the star of its pre-flight safety demonstrations.
Released ahead of the launch of dedicated AIRSORAYAMA flights later this year, the five-minute film transforms the mandatory pre-flight briefing into a cinematic experience while delivering the required safety message.
The video accompanies STARLUX’s limited-edition AIRSORAYAMA A350-1000 aircraft, whose polished silver and gold liveries were designed by Sorayama and entered service earlier this month.
Sexy Robot takes passengers through every safety procedure
Rather than traditional cabin crew, the safety demonstration is led by Sorayama’s chrome-plated Sexy Robot, dressed in a customised STARLUX flight attendant uniform.
Throughout the film, the futuristic character demonstrates:
- Fastening and releasing seat belts
- Correct use of oxygen masks
- Emergency brace positions
- Evacuation procedures
- Life jacket operation
- Emergency exits and lighting
A specially created Kid Robot appears during the oxygen mask and child life vest demonstration, including younger passengers in the briefing. Sorayama personally approved the design of the new character.
Nearly two years in production
The project was created by Barcelona-based creative studio SAUVAGE.TV and reportedly took almost two years to complete.
According to the production team, the film combines motion capture, advanced 3D animation and detailed lighting simulations to recreate the reflective chrome finish that has become synonymous with Sorayama’s artwork. The artists also matched the aircraft interiors shown on screen to the bespoke AIRSORAYAMA A350 cabins passengers will experience onboard.
The airline has also released a behind-the-scenes video showing the extensive motion-capture work, digital animation and rendering required to bring the project to life.
Part of a wider AIRSORAYAMA collaboration
The safety video is the latest stage of STARLUX’s collaboration with artist Hajime Sorayama.
The partnership includes two specially liveried Airbus A350-1000 aircraft—one finished in silver and another in gold—featuring Sorayama’s signature metallic aesthetic and his distinctive Mechanical Shark artwork beneath the fuselage.
STARLUX has said the themed aircraft will offer a fully immersive passenger experience extending beyond the exterior artwork to include cabin branding, onboard products and the exclusive safety film.
Making passengers pay attention to safety briefings
Airlines have long experimented with creative safety videos that encourage passengers to watch mandatory briefings; many focus on popular culture including film franchises, television programmes and games. Previous examples range from Air New Zealand’s Hobbit safety video production (billed as the most epic safety video ever made) to Turkish Airlines’ Lego-themed briefing and many variations in between.
STARLUX’s approach leans into contemporary art, using one of Japan’s most recognisable pop-art creations to capture attention while reinforcing key safety procedures.
For Sorayama—whose futuristic metallic robots have influenced fashion, music and industrial design for decades—the collaboration also marks his first aviation project.
