Hydrogen fuel cell developer H2FLY is to participate in the multinational GOLIAT (Ground Operations of Liquid Hydrogen Aircraft) project, a collaborative initiative aiming to demonstrate the safe and reliable handling of liquid hydrogen for airport refuelling operations.

Led by Airbus and supported by academic partners, the GOLIAT project will receive $10.8 million of funding from the EU’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme over a duration of four years to show how small-scale liquid hydrogen aircraft ground operations can be performed safely at three European airports.

“Leveraging our experience in the HEAVEN project, where we completed the world’s first piloted flight of a liquid hydrogen-powered electric aircraft, we look forward to contributing our expertise in LH2 operations to GOLIAT,” explained H2FLY co-founder and CEO Josef Kallo. “We believe in the potential of hydrogen to transform aviation and are committed to supporting its adoption for a sustainable future”.

Alongside developing and demonstrating scalable liquid hydrogen refuelling technologies at airports, the GOLIAT initiative will also help to develop the standardisation and certification framework of future liquid hydrogen operations, and assess the sizing and economics of hydrogen value chains for airports. Airports involved include Rotterdam The Hague, Stuttgart and Budapest Airport.
