Archer’s Midnight completes first piloted city-to-city round trip

Archer has completed its first piloted city-to-city round trip with its Midnight electric air taxi, marking a key step towards future commercial operations.

Archer Aviation has completed its first piloted city-to-city return flight with its Midnight electric air taxi, marking an important step as the company shifts from aircraft development towards the commercial operations it hopes to begin later this year.

The flight, conducted on 30 July, saw Midnight depart Salinas Municipal Airport, fly to Monterey Regional Airport and return to Salinas in what Archer described as its first inter-city roundtrip mission.

Each leg took about nine minutes, compared with a journey of more than 35 minutes by road. The flight was carried out in close coordination with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as part of preparations for operations under the White House’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP).

While the flight lasted only a few minutes, it represented much more than another test sortie. It was designed to demonstrate the type of short regional connection Archer expects Midnight to perform when commercial services begin.

“This roundtrip journey is exactly the kind of route we plan to fly with Midnight under the eIPP and in Los Angeles during the Olympic Games,” said Adam Goldstein, Archer’s founder and chief executive officer. “This mission provides a template for us to replicate with our partners across Texas, Florida and New York as we get ready for eIPP operations later this year.”

How Archer is preparing Midnight for commercial operations

Since Midnight first flew in 2023, Archer’s programme has largely focused on validating the aircraft itself. The latest mission shifts attention to something equally important on how an electric air taxi would operate as part of a transport network.

Rather than simply flying from one point to another, the mission involved airport-to-airport operations under procedures developed with the FAA. Archer is using these flights to refine operating practices, infrastructure requirements and coordination between airports, regulators and local authorities before launching commercial services.

The company is working with federal, state and municipal partners to establish the operational framework needed for electric air taxis, covering everything from flight procedures and charging infrastructure to local operating capabilities.

That work forms part of the White House’s eIPP initiative, which aims to help selected operators demonstrate how advanced air mobility aircraft can be integrated safely into the US transportation system.

Preparing for the LA28 Olympic Games

The latest flight also supports Archer’s preparations for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where the company has been selected as the Official Air Taxi Provider.

Archer plans to use Midnight to connect key enues, airports and transport hubs across the Los Angeles area, allowing passengers to bypass some of the city’s busiest roads with short electric flights.

The company believes aircraft such as Midnight can replace road journeys lasting between 60 and 90 minutes with flights measured in minutes, particularly in heavily congested metropolitan areas.

Beyond California, Archer is also preparing similar operational concepts with partners in Texas, Florida and New York through the eIPP programme.

How Archer’s Midnight air taxi is designed for urban travel

Unlike conventional helicopters, Midnight has been designed specifically for frequent, short-distance operations.

The piloted aircraft accommodates four passengers and one pilot and uses an all-electric propulsion system intended to reduce both operating noise and local emissions. Rather than serving long regional routes, it is aimed at connecting airports, city centres and other transport hubs through frequent, high-utilisation flights.

The aircraft has been flying since 2023 as Archer works through the FAA certification process, which remains the company’s primary focus before passenger operations can begin.

Certification continues through close collaboration with the FAA, although Archer has not announced a target date for final approval.

How Midnight is becoming more than a single aircraft

The latest demonstration also comes as Archer broadens the technology developed for Midnight into other markets.

Speaking to Aerospace Global News at the Farnborough International Airshow, Archer Chief Technology Officer Tom Muniz said the company’s next-generation aircraft programmes build directly on the propulsion, battery and manufacturing technologies developed for Midnight over the past eight years.

Those efforts include Halo, a hybrid-electric autonomous cargo aircraft, and Thunder, its defence counterpart being developed with Anduril. Although they serve different missions, both share the same core airframe architecture and hybrid-electric propulsion system.

Muniz stressed, however, that Midnight remains Archer’s first commercial priority.

“Having an initial defence application gives us a more efficient path to get some new technology into market,” he told AGN, explaining that experience gained from future defence programmes could later feed back into Archer’s commercial aircraft.

Japan’s Marubeni Aerospace has already been announced as the first strategic launch partner for Halo’s commercial cargo operations, reflecting Archer’s ambition to expand beyond passenger transport once Midnight enters service.

A step closer to commercial electric air taxi operations

The Salinas-Monterey mission does not mean Archer is ready to launch passenger services tomorrow. Certification remains the final hurdle before Midnight can begin carrying paying customers.

What the flight does demonstrate is that Archer is moving beyond proving that Midnight can fly. The company is now testing how the aircraft will fit into everyday transport, working alongside regulators and local authorities to develop the procedures needed for routine operations.
