Turkish airport operator, TAV Holding is set to invest an additional $362 million in Almaty International Airport according to the Kazakh Transport Ministry.
Last year saw the official opening of the airport’s new 53,500 sqm international terminal in June 2024. The busiest hub in Central Asia, the airport is a home base to national flag carrier Air Astana and Scat Airlines and is served by airlines including, Turkish Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways, flydbubai and IndiGo.
According to a report in the Astana Times, the new funds will be used to reconstruct the runway, build a new apron for cargo transport companies, renovate the domestic terminal, modernise and digitise the existing cargo warehouses, construct an airport hotel and take other measures to improve the airport’s operations. A new medical centre will also be constructed on airport grounds which will be open for both employees and residents living nearby.
Almaty Airport has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Ministry outlining the investment details, timelines and key steps for further development.
TAV’s investment in Antalya
TAV’s additional investment in Almaty follows its announcement last month that through a joint venture with Fraport, it has also secured €2.5 billion long-term financing for Antalya Airport in Turkey. The loan, which will be provided by a consortium of lenders including Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Bank of China, International Finance Corporation and National Bank of Greece, will provide the necessary infrastructure to support the region’s long-term development.
