Air New Zealand will begin selling SkyNest sleep pod sessions from May 18, giving economy passengers a chance to lie flat on its longest Boeing 787-9 flights.

After years of development and testing, Air New Zealand is finally bringing its game-changing Economy SkyNest to market—giving economy and premium economy passengers a way to lie flat to sleep on long-haul flights for the first time.

The airline has confirmed its much-anticipated SkyNest sleep pods will go on sale from May 18, 2026, with a November debut onboard its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The launch route is one of the world’s longest—New York (JFK) to Auckland (AKL)—around 18 hours nonstop.

A bunk-bed solution for ultra-long-haul flights

The Air New Zealand SkyNest, which won a Crystal Cabin Award as the most innovative cabin concept in 2023, introduces six lie-flat sleep pods in a bunk-style layout positioned between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. Each pod includes a full-length mattress, bedding, ventilation, ambient lighting, and privacy curtains—essentially creating a compact sleeping cabin for economy travellers.

Passengers can book these pods for timed four-hour sessions and leave their seats during the flight to sleep horizontally.

Air New Zealand CEO Nikhil Ravishankar said the concept reflects the airline’s deep understanding of ultra-long-haul travel.

“New Zealand’s unique location means we understand long-haul travel better than anyone,” Ravishankar said. “On some of the world’s longest commercial flights to and from New Zealand, Skynest is designed to make a real difference to the journey. Featuring six lie-flat pods in a bunk-style layout between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins, it gives customers the opportunity to stretch out, lie flat and get a few hours’ proper rest in the air.”

How the Air New Zealand SkyNest works

Passengers in Economy and Premium Economy can book a four-hour sleep session during the flight, with two sessions initially offered per journey. Pricing starts at $495 per session.

The experience is designed around natural sleep cycles, giving travellers time to settle, sleep, and wake gradually before returning to their seats.

Each SkyNest booking includes:

  • A lie-flat bed with fresh bedding
  • Privacy curtain and ambient lighting
  • USB-A and USB-C charging
  • Ventilation and reading light
  • A “Nestcessities” kit with eye mask, socks, earplugs, therapeutic Aotea skincare, and dental care items

The airline says bedding is fully refreshed between each session, addressing hygiene concerns that might be a barrier to shared sleep concepts.

“It’s a simple idea with a powerful impact: swap the headrest for bedrest, and arrive ready to go,” Ravishankar said.

A new standard for economy travel?

SkyNest is the first product of its kind to enter commercial service, following years of testing with more than 200 customers. The concept also builds on Air New Zealand’s earlier Skycouch—another way to improve rest in economy, developed by the innovative Kiwi carrier.

“Skycouch gave customers more choice in how they travel, and Skynest builds on that by offering a new option for rest on our longest flights,” Ravishankar said.

Airlines are increasingly focused on well-being for long-haul travel, and Air New Zealand’s SkyNest extends that consideration to economy class passengers in a relatively affordable way.

More than just SkyNest: a full cabin upgrade

SkyNest is part of a wider cabin overhaul on Air New Zealand’s new Dreamliners, spanning all classes.

Premium Economy introduces fixed-shell seats, which allow passengers to recline without intruding on others.

Economy features upgraded storage for personal items and 13.3” in-flight entertainment screens.

A new Sky Pantry self-service snack area is available to Economy and Premium Economy passengers for refreshments during the flight.

These updates reposition the Air New Zealand passenger experience around comfort, flexibility, and personal choice on ultra-long-haul routes.

What the roll-out of SkyNest means for passengers

Ultra-long-haul flights—especially routes like New York to Auckland—push the limits of passenger endurance. Until now, true lie-flat sleep has only been available in premium cabins. SkyNest changes that.

For travellers willing to pay an extra fee, it offers an opportunity to get some quality sleep when flying with an economy ticket. That could be a game-changer for comfort, reducing jet lag, improving productivity after landing, and ensuring a better overall travel experience.

If successful, SkyNest could inspire other airlines to explore new ways to differentiate their long-haul cabins without significantly sacrificing seat count.
