London Heathrow rounds off record summer with busiest ever arrivals day
October 11, 2024
London’s Heathrow Airport has recorded its busiest start to Autumn on record, with almost 7.3 million passengers passing through its terminals in September; a month which also marked the busiest ever arrivals day.
Although the same month last year had marked a new record of over seven million passengers a month, September 2024 continued to surpass this total; rounding off a record summer season with over 30 million passengers travelling through its gates between June and September. The airport’s busiest ever arrivals day was also recorded on 2 September, with over 140,500 passengers landing at the London location.
Noting the airport was “closing out [its] summer on a high,” Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye added: “being named the most connected airport and best airport for retail in the world is testament to the strong relationship we have cultivated with our airlines and retailers”.
Air transport movements from the UK market continued to show the biggest growth (10.3%), with the area contributing to a double-digit percentage change of 14% year-to-date. Following this were EU and non-EU Europe regions, although Asia-Pacific and African movements were down -3.4% and -6% respectively.
Terminal passenger numbers displayed single-digit improvement month-on-month across all regions except Africa (down 11.4%), with UK passengers up 5.6% to 378,000 in September 2024. EU terminal passengers were the highest, accounting for over 2.5 million travellers; a 4.8% increase month-on-month.
