Boeing is to make a second round of voluntary layoffs as the COVID-19 crisis deepens.
Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun wrote to staff on Monday offering redundancy packages to employees in its commercial aircraft and services businesses as well as corporate functions.Calhoun said that the company was anticipating a significantly smaller market over the coming years. He wrote: “Unfortunately, layoffs are a hard but necessary step to align to our new reality, preserve liquidity and position ourselves for the eventual return to growth.”
10 per cent cut to workforce announced in April
Boeing announced it would cut its 160,000-person workforce by about 10 per cent in April as carriers continued to adapt to border and quarantine restrictions imposed to slow the spread of COVID-19 which has resulted in dramatically reduced demand for air travel.
Boeing restarted MAX production in May after a five-month halt. MAX parts and fuselage maker Spirit AeroSystems (SPR) was directed to halt work in early June after the manufacturer faced additional setbacks in re-certifying its grounded 737 MAX jets following two fatal crashes.
More details regarding the voluntary layoffs will be made available to Boeing staff next week.
