The first Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft to undergo extensive modification work for integration of the Persistent German Airborne Surveillance System (PEGASUS) has rolled out of the Bombardier Defense modification line, with the three-aircraft programme desctibed as being “on track” by HENSOLDT.

The Bombardier Global 6000 is the German air force and Cyber Command’s platform of choice to integrate the HENSOLDT Kalaetron Integral signals intelligence (SIGINT) system for airborne surveillance missions, with the modification work to be completed by Lufthansa Technik Defense at its special mission centre in Hamburg, Germany.

“Thanks to our companies’ continued close collaboration and joint expertise, we are making important strides and have a clear line of sight on the aircraft’s upcoming milestones, including the start of the flight test campaign in the coming months,” explained Jürgen Halder, vice president airborne SIGINT at HENSOLDT.

Michael von Puttkamer,  vice president of special aircraft services at Lufthansa Technik, described the roll-out of the first structurally modified aircraft as a major milestone “not just as an important prerequisite for Lufthansa Technik Defense’s PEGASUS work packages, but for the overall progress of this pioneering signals intelligence aircraft project”.

The remaining two aircraft are undergoing modifications at Bombardier’s facility in Kansas, which will also be the site of initial ground and flight test activities. Upon conclusion of initial testing, further integration work will be performed at Lufthansa Technik Defense’s Hamburg facilities.
