FedEx Express announced that it was exercising options on ten ATR 72-600 turboprop freighters, adding to a previous commitment for 30 aircraft. These will be delivered between 2027 and 2029, but before that, the company will receive the new batch of eight additional Boeing 777Fs. Three of the Boeing 777Fs will be delivered in 2026 with the remaining five due to follow in 2027. This brings the FedEx total of open orders with Boeing to ten Model 777Fs, and the company also has commitments for another nine 767Fs.

FedEx say that the introduction of more modern aircraft like the 777F and the 767-300F will bring significantly more fuel efficiency into its widebody fleet, as it continues to try to cut costs and make its operations more efficient. The company has also decided to postpone the retirement of its remaining McDonnell-Douglas MD-11Fs by a further four years from 2028 to 2032, but in the longer term will no doubt introduce a next generation freighter like the Airbus A350F or the Boeing 777-8F.

At the moment, FedEx has a fleet of more than 400 aircraft, including 15 ATR42Fs, 42 ATR72Fs, 65 Airbus A300-600Fs, one B737-400F, eight B737-800Fs, 87 B757-200Fs, and 58 MD-11 freighters, though only 25-37 of the latter are in active service.

The most modern aircraft in use are 143 B767-300Fs (which have an average age of almost six years), and 58 B777Fs (with an average age of about 9.5 years).
