Joby is flying a Cessna Caravan across America while its pilot stays on the ground

Joby Aviation has begun a month-long tour across the US to demonstrate the capabilities of its autonomous aircraft, taking the technology from California to the East Coast and back through a series of stops in 10 states.
The tour, part of Joby’s 2026 ‘Electric Skies’ programme, is designed to showcase the real-world operational maturity of the company’s autonomous flight system and its potential applications in both civilian and defence operations.
Demonstrations will focus on uses ranging from freight and medical transport to emergency response and military logistics.
Joby’s autonomous Cessna Caravan embarks on US tour
At the centre of the tour is Joby’s J208, a converted Cessna Grand Caravan equipped with the company’s autonomous flight technology. By integrating the system into an existing, certified aircraft platform, Joby says it can provide a more immediate and scalable route to autonomous air logistics.

“Autonomous flight can transform how we deliver essential supplies, respond to emergencies and support our servicemen and women,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation.
“We have already demonstrated this technology in demanding military exercises. Now, we’re taking it across America to show how the aircraft can integrate into our national airspace to serve communities, strengthen our logistics networks and help keep people out of harm’s way,” he added.
The tour takes in multiple US cities
The J208 will make stops including Phoenix, Fort Worth, Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, the Outer Banks and Raleigh in North Carolina, Stafford and Washington, DC, Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City and Salt Lake City, before the tour concludes in Portland, Oregon.
According to the company, each location has a specific role in demonstrating the potential of autonomous flight. In Phoenix, the aircraft will highlight applications for defence, first responders and cargo operators, while Fort Worth will focus on autonomous freight operations at Alliance Airport, one of the country’s major industrial logistics hubs.

In South Carolina, the aircraft will demonstrate military operations and tactical capabilities. The eastbound journey will also carry symbolic significance. The J208 is scheduled to reach the Outer Banks of North Carolina, near Kitty Hawk, marking the completion of the coast-to-coast leg close to the site where the Wright brothers made their pioneering flights.
North Carolina will provide a further opportunity to demonstrate how autonomous aviation could support public services. Joby is working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation through the eLIFT-NC initiative, which is aimed at developing a statewide aviation network capable of supporting healthcare logistics and rapid emergency medical response.
Further north, Joby plans to demonstrate autonomous operations in the complex airspace around Washington, D.C. The aircraft will then travel to Louisville, where the company will highlight the potential for cargo automation at UPS Worldport.

The tour will also visit Wichita, home of Textron Aviation, the original manufacturer of the Cessna Grand Caravan airframe, before continuing to Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City and Portland.
Demonstrating the capabilities of autonomous flight
Several of the western stops form part of the ‘uFLY coalition’, a five-state partnership examining autonomous flight across challenging environments. Joby says operations in Utah, Arizona, Oklahoma and Oregon will help generate data on flying at high altitudes, in desert environments and across varied regional airspace.
The demonstrations build on what Joby describes as a growing operational track record. The J208 has completed more than 400 flights and accumulated more than 800 hours of automated flight time in both controlled and uncontrolled airspace.
Its autonomy system originated with Xwing, a company acquired by Joby in 2024. The technology has subsequently been tested during three US military exercises, including Agile Flag, where the aircraft demonstrated its ability to operate on unpredictable schedules and deliver cargo such as replacement aircraft parts.

According to Joby, one Agile Flag mission enabled replacement parts to reach an aircraft in a way that allowed it to return to service roughly 24 hours sooner than would have been possible using a conventional logistics run.
The technology was also demonstrated during REFORPAC, a major military logistics exercise conducted across the Pacific and Hawaii in August 2025. During that exercise, the aircraft was operated by ground control stations located almost 4,000 miles away in Guam.
Autonomous flight but with human oversight
Despite the emphasis on autonomous operation, the J208 does not currently operate without human oversight. Joby uses a supervised autonomy model in which a ground-based remote pilot acts as Pilot in Command.
The remote pilot can supervise the flight, update flight plans, and communicate with air traffic control using the aircraft’s standard radios. An onboard monitoring pilot is also present for selected operations.

Rather than presenting the J208 as an entirely independent aircraft, Joby is demonstrating a system designed to work within existing aviation procedures and infrastructure while reducing the need for a pilot to be physically onboard.
The cross-country journey is more than a technology showcase. It is also an effort to demonstrate how autonomous aircraft could operate across different regions, airspace environments and mission profiles in the real world.
Part of the future for US air transportation systems
The tour comes as Joby participates in the White House-backed eVTOL and Advanced Air Mobility Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), which is intended to support the integration of next-generation aviation technologies into the US transport system.

As the J208 travels across the country, Joby will use the demonstrations to gather operational experience while showing potential customers, regulators and public agencies how autonomous aircraft could eventually move goods, deliver medical supplies, support emergency services and perform defence missions.
For Joby, the message is that autonomous aviation is moving beyond controlled test environments. Its coast-to-coast journey is intended to show that the technology can operate across America’s diverse aviation landscape and potentially become part of the country’s future logistics and transportation infrastructure.
