Condition lifted allowing all airlines to land at Nuuk Airport

April 3, 2025

A restriction allowing only Air Greenland and Icelandair to land at Nuuk International Airport when it opened last year has been lifted, enabling all airlines to serve the new hub.
Operated by Greenland Airports, Nuuk International Airport opened in November 2024 with a condition from the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority that only Air Greenland and Icelandair were permitted to serve it as commercial carriers.
With the condition now lifted, Nuuk is now open to all carriers with United Airlines, Air Seven and SAS already scheduled to serve the new hub.
Marking a historic milestone for the country, the opening of Nuuk Airport has meant that international flights can now fly directly into Greenland’s capital. Prior to its opening the airport’s runway couldn’t accommodate large aircraft, so passengers had to travel via smaller cities such as Kangerlussuaq to the north or Narsarsuq further south to access Nuuk.
The airport now features a 2,200-metre-long runway enabling larger aircraft to land there. It is also equipped with an Instrument Landing System (ILS) allowing for precise landings even in the most challenging winter conditions.
A statement from Greenland Airports read: “The new airport in Nuuk has created renewed and greater demand for travel to Greenland, and therefore, it’s also an important step that the airport is now approved to receive all airlines that wishes to use our fantastic country as a destination.”
Hailing the promise of a bright future for Greenland tourism, the new airport is one of three that Greenland Airports is developing. By 2026, the operator plans to open two additional hubs in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq in the south of the country.
