Airbus U030 Flexrotor begins first European maritime surveillance missions for EMSA

Airbus Helicopters’ U030 Flexrotor has entered operational service in Europe for the first time, beginning maritime surveillance missions in the Baltic Sea on behalf of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) under a €30 million (about $35 million) framework contract.
 
The deployment marks the first operational service of the tactical uncrewed aircraft in Europe, moving the Flexrotor programme from demonstrations and customer evaluations into routine maritime surveillance missions for European authorities.

Operations began in July across the Baltic region, supporting national authorities in Estonia, Latvia and Finland following a series of validation flights that confirmed the technical and regulatory requirements required for entry into service.
 
The deployment follows the framework contract awarded to Airbus Helicopters by EMSA in December 2025 to provide Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) services for multipurpose maritime surveillance across the European Union.
 
Airbus is delivering the capability in partnership with French operator Extensee, which operates the aircraft while Airbus manages and coordinates missions under the EMSA framework.

The U030 Flexrotor enters frontline service to support coastguard and maritime security missions across the Baltic Sea

The U030 Flexrotor has been designed to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities from a compact vertical take-off and landing platform capable of operating with a minimal logistical footprint.

During operations, the aircraft transmits live intelligence gathered through electro-optical, infrared and radar payloads directly to the EMSA RPAS Data Centre, allowing participating national authorities to monitor missions in real time and integrate the information into their own operational decision-making systems.
 
The system will support a broad range of coastguard activities, including search and rescue, fisheries enforcement, environmental monitoring, maritime traffic surveillance and the detection of illegal activities at sea.
 
Victor Gerin-Roze, Head of Uncrewed Aerial Systems at Airbus Helicopters, said the deployment represented an important milestone for both the aircraft and European maritime surveillance.
 
“We are pleased to see the U030 Flexrotor begin operational service under the EMSA framework, marking its first operational deployment in Europe and supporting the critical mission of enhancing maritime surveillance.”

European operations follow growing international interest in Airbus’ tactical uncrewed aircraft

The start of operations comes on the heels of Airbus announcing that Voyageur Aviation had become the Canadian launch customer for the U030 Flexrotor, with plans to introduce the aircraft for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions across Canada.

Together, the two announcements highlight the programme’s transition from development and customer demonstrations to operational deployment, with Europe becoming the first region where the aircraft is routinely supporting government maritime surveillance missions while preparations begin for its introduction into Canadian service.
 
The U030 Flexrotor is capable of conducting fully autonomous take-offs and landings within a compact operating area and can remain airborne for more than 12 hours, making it suitable for extended maritime surveillance, border security and intelligence missions.
 
Its modular payload architecture enables the integration of electro-optical, infrared and radar sensors, allowing operators to tailor the platform for a range of military, coastguard and civil applications.

 The EMSA deployment represents an important operational milestone for Airbus’ growing uncrewed aircraft portfolio, demonstrating the transition of the Flexrotor from development into government service.

The deployment provides the first operational validation of the U030 Flexrotor in European service. And for EMSA and participating national authorities, it introduces another persistent surveillance capability at a time when maritime security, environmental monitoring and coastguard operations are placing increasing demands on unmanned systems across Europe’s coastal waters.
