Voyageur becomes Airbus’ first Canadian customer for U030 Flexrotor tactical uncrewed aircraft system

Airbus has secured Voyageur Aviation as the Canadian launch customer for the U030 Flexrotor tactical VTOL UAS, expanding its presence in Canada.

Airbus Helicopters has secured its first Canadian customer for the U030 Flexrotor uncrewed aerial system (UAS), with Voyageur Aviation signing a purchase agreement that brings the tactical vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) platform into Canada for the first time.
 
The agreement, signed at the Farnborough International Airshow, makes Voyageur the launch customer for the U030 Flexrotor in Canada and follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies at CANSEC in May to support Canada’s evolving defence requirements.
 
The purchase also marks Voyageur’s entry into operating the Airbus-developed tactical UAS as it expands its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
 
The announcement gives Airbus an important foothold in Canada’s tactical uncrewed aircraft market as demand grows for systems capable of operating in remote, maritime and Arctic environments.
 
Originally developed by US-based Aerovel before becoming part of Airbus’ uncrewed systems portfolio, the U030 Flexrotor is designed for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions while also supporting a range of government and civil operations.

The purchase follows the memorandum of understanding signed by Airbus Helicopters and Voyageur earlier this year, with both companies aiming to combine Airbus’ UAS technology with Voyageur’s operational expertise to deliver uncrewed aerial services for government and commercial customers across Canada.

Voyageur, a subsidiary of Chorus Aviation, has more than five decades of experience supporting defence, government and civilian operators through aircraft operations, maintenance, engineering and training. The addition of the Flexrotor extends the company’s capabilities into tactical uncrewed aircraft operations.
 
“This purchase represents a significant advancement in Voyageur’s ISR strategy and an important first for the Canadian market,” said Cory Cousineau, President of Voyageur.
 
“As the first Flexrotor operator in Canada, Voyageur is well positioned to introduce and operationalise this new technology within the realities of Canada’s operating environment.”
 
He added that Voyageur’s experience in aircraft operations, maintenance, training and sustainment would provide “a solid foundation to support the safe and effective operation of this new technology” while enabling the company to offer “a rapidly deployable and mission-ready ISR solution anywhere in Canada or beyond.”

Airbus positions the Flexrotor for long-endurance ISTAR missions across land and maritime environments

 
The U030 Flexrotor is a Group 2 tactical VTOL uncrewed aircraft system with a maximum take-off weight of 25kg. Designed for expeditionary operations, it can remain airborne for between 12 and 14 hours in a typical mission configuration while carrying electro-optical payloads and other mission sensors.

Unlike conventional fixed-wing UAS, the Flexrotor combines vertical take-off and landing capability with long-endurance flight. It requires an operating area measuring only 3.7 by 3.7 metres and can autonomously launch and recover from land or ships without a flight deck, allowing it to operate from remote locations with a minimal logistical footprint.
 
Airbus says the platform is intended for a broad range of military and civil missions, including ISTAR, maritime surveillance, communications relay, search and rescue, border security, environmental monitoring and infrastructure inspection. Its expeditionary design allows the aircraft to be transported easily and prepared for flight in less than 30 minutes.
 
The characteristics of the platform are relevant given the country’s extensive coastline, Arctic territories and remote operating areas where persistent surveillance is often required but conventional runways are unavailable.

Dwayne Charette, President of Airbus Helicopters in Canada, said the agreement reflects growing demand for tactical uncrewed systems capable of supporting increasingly complex operational requirements.
 
“Bringing the Flexrotor into Canada with an experienced operator like Voyageur underscores Airbus’ commitment to delivering next-generation tactical capabilities to the region,” he said.
 
“As operational requirements continue to evolve, operators need systems that deliver greater reach, persistence, and situational awareness. Flexrotor’s advanced design and its potential to support crewed-uncrewed teaming represents a critical shift in how complex ISTAR missions can be executed.”
 
He added that Airbus was proud to support Voyageur as it introduced “this proven capability to meet Canada’s evolving operational requirements.”
 
The purchase agreement also opens the way for the two companies to explore future contracted UAS services for government and commercial customers in Canada.
 
According to the companies, potential applications include border and land surveillance, maritime and Arctic operations, environmental monitoring and search and rescue support.
