A significant milestone passed largely unremarked in January – Airbus passed 20,000 single aisle orders

February 27, 2025

At launch, the total sales prediction for the A320 alone was just 600 aircraft, and as of the end of December 2024, 6,882 A320 and A320neo airliners had been delivered, and orders stood at 8,839.
Add in the longer A321 and the shortened A318 and A319, and orders for the family topped 19,075, with 11,865 delivered.
Then in January, Airbus announced 55 orders and 25 deliveries, taking the totals to 20,030 and 11,890, respectively.
The Airbus A320 family consists of a series of narrow-body, single aisle airliner variants. The original A320 was launched in March 1984, and made its maiden flight on 22 February 1987, entering service with Air France in April 1988. The stretched A321 entered service in January 1994, and by the end of 2024, 3,393 had been delivered, of 8,613 ordered.
Some 1,510 examples of the shortened A319 have been delivered since April 1996, of 1,534 ordered, together with 80 A318s since July 2003.
The A220 (formerly the Bombardier C Series) is not included in the figures. It is produced by the Airbus Canada Limited Partnership (ACLP) at Mirabel, in Canada. Some 392 have been delivered, of a 904 aircraft orderbook.
By comparison, 16,737 Boeing 737s had been ordered by January 2025, with 11,965 aircraft delivered. The 737 was the best-selling commercial aircraft until orders were overtaken by the competing Airbus A318/319/320/321 family in October 2019. Boeing’s lead in total deliveries has narrowed considerably, with Airbus just 100 aircraft behind!
