A striking new presence has joined the line-up at this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT). For the first time in its history, the Egyptian Air Force is taking part in the show-and it’s brought with it a particularly rare and distinctive aircraft: the Antonov An-74T ‘Coaler’.

With its unmistakable high-mounted engines and rugged, utilitarian silhouette, the Egyptian Air Force An-74T stands apart on the static display line, reflecting its origins in Soviet-era design and its continued role in tactical airlift operations.

Flies like an Egyptian

Egypt’s participation not only marks its debut at RIAT but also adds a unique dimension to the 2025 event, as it becomes the 59th nation to contribute aircraft to the show.

When was it designated ‘Coaler’?

Developed from the Antonov An-72, the An-74 first flew in 1983 and was designated ‘Coaler’ by NATO.

It shares the An-72’s unusual engine configuration, positioned above and forward of the wing to enhance short take-off performance.

However, the An-74 is more than just a derivative. It features a more powerful radar system, extended range, and upgraded avionics. Some variants are capable of operating with ski landing gear for Arctic or unprepared surfaces.

Among Soviet aircrews, both types were nicknamed ‘Cheburashka’ due to the prominent engine pods, which resembled the oversized ears of a well-known children’s cartoon character of the time.

The configuration, though unconventional, makes the aircraft highly effective for operations on rough or short runways-qualities which remain valued today.

How many An-74s are with the Egyptian Air Force?

The Egyptian Air Force currently operates three An-74s, each outfitted with a modern glass cockpit and serving in tactical transport roles. These aircraft are based at Cairo International Airport as part of an independent flight under the 533 Air Wing.

While there were initial plans for a larger fleet, Egypt ultimately took delivery of just three airframes.

Where can you find the aircraft at RIAT25?

The aircraft attending RIAT25 is appearing on static display throughout the show’s three-day run, offering aviation enthusiasts a rare opportunity to view the An-74T up close.

With few air forces currently operating the type, and even fewer flying it to international events, its appearance at RAF Fairford is a notable development for both RIAT and Egypt’s growing global defence engagement.
