Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is bringing back a hallmark of premium intra-European air travel – the blocked middle seat – with the launch of its new European business class.

The move marks an upgrade for the airline’s regional offering and comes in response to growing customer demand for more space, comfort, and a clearly defined premium experience, the carrier said.

Available for booking from May 6, the revamped business class will include a dedicated front cabin section, enhanced in-flight dining on reusable crockery, and priority services on the ground including fast-track check-in and lounge access.

Crucially, SAS will reinstate the empty middle seat in business class – a feature common to other European legacy carriers who do not opt for full lie-flat business class seating, which is more common in the Middle East or Asia. SAS is also adding a curtain to separate the cabin from economy passengers.

“Many of our comfort- and quality-focused travellers expect a clearly defined European business class that aligns with international standards,” said SAS Chief Commercial Officer Paul Verhagen.

“While SAS Plus has provided an upgraded experience, it has lacked the recognition and clarity that travellers seek. With the reintroduction of European business class, we are ensuring that SAS offers the premium experience of a top European airline.”

The airline says the new offering supports its long-term strategy to grow its premium market share and strengthen Copenhagen’s position as a key European hub. The upgrade also aligns SAS with major alliance partners, offering a more seamless experience for international passengers connecting through its network.
