Qatar Airways announces new Doha-Western Sydney flights for 2027

Qatar Airways has announced plans to launch direct flights between Doha and Western Sydney International Airport in December 2027, expanding international travel options for passengers across Australia’s rapidly growing western suburbs.
The new service, scheduled to begin on 15 December 2027, will connect Western Sydney (WSI) with Qatar Airways’ extensive global network through Hamad International Airport in Doha (DOH).
The announcement marks another important milestone for Western Sydney International Airport and highlights the growing influence of Qatar Airways’ partnership with Virgin Australia on competition in the Australian long-haul market.
Qatar Airways to launch three weekly flights
The airline will initially operate three return services per week between Doha and Western Sydney International Airport, also known as Nancy-Bird Walton Airport.
Flights from Doha to Western Sydney are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while return services will depart Western Sydney on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The route will initially use Qatar Airways flight numbers QR906 and QR907, with the airline indicating that it intends to progressively increase operations to daily services.
The new service is expected to provide passengers with a new alternative to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) for international journeys.
The additional gateway is particularly significant for residents of western Sydney, who will be able to access Qatar Airways’ international network without necessarily travelling across the metropolitan area to Sydney’s existing international airport.

Qatar Airways plans to operate Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on the new route, offering a premium long-haul experience alongside substantial economy-class capacity. The planned configuration includes 42 Business Class seats and 312 Economy Class seats.
Business Class passengers will have access to the airline’s Qsuite product, which features private seating arrangements designed to enhance comfort and privacy. Passengers will also benefit from complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi, providing high-speed internet connectivity during the journey.
The combination of premium seating, onboard connectivity and access to a major international hub is expected to appeal to business travellers, holidaymakers and passengers visiting friends and relatives overseas.
Doha opens connections to more than 170 destinations
The new Western Sydney service will connect passengers through Hamad International Airport, Qatar Airways’ principal hub, which serves more than 170 destinations worldwide.
Travellers will be able to connect onwards to cities across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and other international markets, subject to available schedules.

For Australian passengers, Doha provides an alternative routing to traditional connections through Asian hubs or direct services to selected European destinations.
The Western Sydney route will also strengthen links between Australia and Qatar, supporting tourism, business travel and international trade.
Qatar-Virgin partnership reshapes long-haul competition
The Western Sydney announcement comes as Qatar Airways and Virgin Australia deepen their commercial partnership, creating a stronger competitive force in Australia’s international aviation market.
Approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in March 2025, the integrated alliance enables Virgin Australia to market international flights operated by Qatar Airways under Virgin flight numbers.
The arrangement includes 28 weekly return flight frequencies between Australia and Doha, covering major gateways including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. All flights are operated by Boeing 777-300ER equipment.

Under the wet-lease arrangement, Qatar Airways supplies the aircraft and operational expertise for these services, while Virgin Australia gains a route into long-haul international flying and access to Qatar Airways’ extensive onward network.
The partnership also gives Australian travellers additional booking options and opportunities to connect with international destinations through Doha.
The competitive implications are significant. Australia’s long-haul market has traditionally been shaped by Qantas and its established international partnerships, including its alliance with Emirates.
The Qatar-Virgin arrangement introduces a more coordinated alternative, combining Virgin Australia’s domestic network and customer base with Qatar Airways’ global reach.
For passengers, increased capacity and stronger competition could encourage airlines to respond with more competitive fares, improved schedules, enhanced loyalty benefits and better onboard services.
However, lower prices are not guaranteed, as fares will continue to depend on demand, operating costs and competition on individual routes.
The alliance also raises important questions about how international airline partnerships influence market concentration.
Although Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways coordinate aspects of their international offering, the ACCC concluded that the arrangement was unlikely to significantly lessen competition and considered that the additional services could stimulate competition across Australia–Middle East routes.
The Western Sydney service extends this strategy by giving Qatar Airways another Australian gateway and potentially broadening the geographic reach of its partnership with Virgin Australia. It also reinforces the position of both airlines as competitors to established international operators.
A major boost for Western Sydney International Airport
The new route is an important development for Western Sydney International Airport, which is designed to provide additional aviation capacity for the Sydney region.
One of its principal advantages is its ability to operate around the clock, unlike Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, which is subject to a night-time curfew. This flexibility is particularly valuable for long-haul airlines seeking to coordinate overnight departures and arrivals with connecting flights.

Western Sydney will become Qatar Airways’ seventh Australian gateway, joining Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. The airline’s arrival will also strengthen the airport’s appeal to international carriers as it develops its route network and attracts passengers from across New South Wales.
The new service could also generate benefits beyond passenger travel, supporting tourism, employment and international trade.
Improved air connectivity can make Western Sydney more accessible to overseas visitors, while additional international capacity may create opportunities for hotels, restaurants, tourism operators and local businesses.
The route will help exporters access customers in the Gulf and other overseas markets through Qatar Airways’ cargo network. By attracting international airlines and encouraging additional visitor expenditure, Western Sydney International Airport aims to become a significant contributor to the region’s long-term economic development.
A new chapter for Australian aviation
Qatar Airways’ planned Western Sydney launch represents more than an expansion of its Australian network. It highlights the growing importance of international airline partnerships in shaping long-haul competition.
Combined with Virgin Australia’s access to Qatar Airways’ global network, the new gateway could broaden passenger choice and increase competitive pressure on established carriers.
As Western Sydney International Airport develops, the route will provide another international travel option for Australians while strengthening the region’s connections with the wider world.
