JetBlue has unveiled BlueFirst, it’s long-awaited entry into the domestic first-class market.

Recliner seats and an upgraded service at the core of JetBlue’s BlueFirst product

The New York-based carrier revealed on 1 September that its new BlueFirst section will feature recliner seats with five inches of recline alongside bento-inspired FirstFare meal boxes.

The domestic first-class service builds on JetBlue’s JetForward strategy, pairing the new seating with advanced seatback technology, seatback ordering and a range of premium amenities. It also follows the airline’s revamped fare structure announced in July.

With Federal Aviation Administration certification now in place, the first aircraft modification is scheduled for 21 September, with a full fleet retrofit expected by 2028. The new product will roll out across the carrier’s Airbus A220, A320 and A321 aircraft that do not already feature its flagship Mint product.

A fresh take on domestic first class

“Domestic first class has become easy to predict,” said Joanna Geraghty, CEO, JetBlue, signalling that the new premium product hails a fresh take on the category.

“Customers are increasingly looking for more premium experiences and BlueFirst gives them an elevated experience that feels distinctly JetBlue.”

Geraghty said the product is built around thoughtful touches, attentive service and great value. “It’s another way we’re bringing our JetForward strategy to life and giving customers more reasons to choose JetBlue.”

BlueFirst benefits, including extra legroom

Seat design sits at the core of BlueFirst. Positioned in a prime location in the first few rows of the cabin to enable faster boarding and deplaning, the recliner seats will feature up to seven inches of extra legroom and up to five inches of recline.

The seats feature Tuft & Needle’s T&N Flex foam designed to provide personalised support and responsive pressure relief throughout the flight. Adjustable headrests and high-backed shells add a further layer of privacy and comfort, while integrated storage lets passengers stow personal devices and redesigned trays double as work surfaces and dining tables.

The cabin will be arranged in a 2-2 configuration across two to four rows, depending on the aircraft type.

Smart in-seat technology

Each seat will also feature a 13.3-inch seatback screen complete with Bluetooth connectivity, allowing passengers to pair the entertainment systems with their own wireless headphones. The screens will feature the newest iteration of Blueprint by JetBlue, the airline’s personalised inflight experience platform.

Seats also feature in-seat USB charging capabilities and complimentary Fly-Fi high-speed internet. Passengers travelling on night flights will receive blankets and snooze kits.

“Customers told us loud and clear that comfort matters most, so that’s where we started,” noted Geraghty. “We worked with Tuft & Needle to create an added level of comfort that makes BlueFirst feel different from the moment you sit down,” she continued.

Curated food and beverage service

BlueFirst’s bento-inspired FirstFare offers a new approach to dining at 35,000 feet, according to Geraghty. She described traditional first-class food and beverage as “feeling stuck in the past.”

On flights of 899 miles or longer, FirstFare combines an entrée, side and dessert, with options such as sweet or savory crepes and sesame noodles with beef or tofu. Every BlueFirst passenger regardless of flight distance will be offered a selection of rotating premium snacks.

The service also includes sommelier-selected wines alongside soft drinks and speciality coffee and teas. Beverages will be served in premium glassware from Fable on artist-designed coasters.

Seatback ordering and an interactive “Mixologist Mode” enable customers to create a custom cocktail by choosing a spirit, mixer and flavourings with orders sent directly to the cabin crew. Meals and other onboard products can also be ordered via the seatback screen.

“BlueFirst is a way of refreshing the experience for today’s traveller,” added Geraghty. She noted, it’s about making the experience more personal, modern and fun, as she said “premium should feel special, not stuffy.”

Competitive positioning

For domestic travellers, BlueFirst sits extra-legroom between Even More economy seating and full lie-flat suites in Mint. The new cabin also positions JetBlue more competitively against the likes of American, Delta and United, all of which operate domestic first-class cabins.

Where JetBlue aims to differentiate is through personalised, smart-ordering technology, complimentary WiFi and contemporary cabin design that will appeal to younger and tech-savvy travellers.
