Iberia is preparing to transport Pope Leo XIV during his first major apostolic journey in Europe, which will take place in Spain from June 6-12, 2026.

The Spanish flag carrier will operate a series of flights on a customised Airbus A320 carrying the pontiff and his delegation between Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria and Tenerife before returning the Pope to Rome at the conclusion of the visit.

Iberia has a long-standing role supporting papal visits to Spain.

A dedicated aircraft for the Holy Father

For the visit, Iberia will place one of its Airbus A320 aircraft at the Holy See’s disposal with modifications to reflect the special mission.

The aircraft will carry the Papal Coat of Arms beside the forward boarding door, and all passenger seats will feature specially designed headrest covers displaying the Vatican emblem.

The scheduled flights are:

  • Madrid–Barcelona (June 9)
  • Barcelona–Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (June 11)
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria–Tenerife North (June 12)
  • Tenerife North–Rome (June 12)

Papal passenger experience on Iberia

Iberia has planned every aspect of the passenger experience, including a bespoke onboard service for the papal delegation, from dedicated branding and catering to the music played during boarding and disembarkation.

Meals are inspired by Spanish cuisine and prepared with seasonal ingredients, with service varying by flight length and schedule. Delegates will be offered breakfasts as well as multi-course meals featuring starters, main courses and desserts. Beverage service features wines from several of Spain’s best-known wine regions, including Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rueda.

Passengers travelling on the flights will also receive Iberia’s Business Class amenity kits inspired by the Iberia cabin crew uniform design by renowned Spanish fashion designer Teresa Helbig.

Religious symbolism will also feature prominently throughout the journey. The airline will display an image of Our Lady of Montserrat in the aircraft cabin during the Madrid-Barcelona sector. An image of Our Lady of Candelaria will accompany flights between Barcelona and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Iberia said the crews assigned to the Papal flights were selected from among employees who volunteered for the operation. The airline described the staff response to the papal service as enthusiastic, with employees expressing pride in being part of the historic event.

Pope Leo XIV’s Augustinian connection reflected in onboard music

One of the more distinctive touches will be the in-flight soundtrack, specially curated for the papal delegation.

Music played during boarding, take-off, landing and disembarkation will feature the Escolanía de El Escorial choir, a renowned Spanish choir founded in 1974 by the Augustinian monks of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

The music selection carries special significance because Pope Leo XIV belonged to the Order of Saint Augustine before his election and served as Prior General of the order for twelve years. The choir has also performed in Rome on multiple occasions.

Passengers will hear recordings from the choir’s albums Cantares, Místico and Panamá Viejo.

Continuing a tradition of Papal flight service

Iberia has supported previous papal visits to Spain. The airline operated domestic flights during Pope John Paul II’s extensive 1982 visit, when he travelled to 18 Spanish cities aboard an Iberia Boeing 727. It also transported him during later visits, including journeys to Santiago de Compostela and Asturias.

Pope Benedict XVI likewise flew aboard Iberia aircraft during his visits to Spain in 2006, 2010 and 2011, including flights on Airbus A321 aircraft before returning to Rome.

For Iberia, transporting Pope Leo XIV is a high-profile VIP event that provides the airline with an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to operate complex, security-sensitive missions while also reflecting Spanish culture in the passenger experience.
