Air India has announced two new codeshare partnerships aimed at boosting its global reach – one with Icelandair, connecting India and Iceland via European gateways, and another with Air Mauritius to enhance access across the Indian Ocean and southern Africa.

The agreement with Icelandair marks the first codeshare partnership between the two national carriers. The deal was signed during the IATA Annual General Meeting in New Delhi.

Air India will attach its ‘AI’ code to Icelandair-operated flights from Reykjavik to a number of major European cities including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Milan and Zurich.

In return, Icelandair will place its ‘FI’ code on Air India-operated services from Delhi to Amsterdam, Paris, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and London Heathrow, and from Mumbai to Frankfurt and London Heathrow.

“We are happy to embark on this codeshare partnership with Icelandair, which unites two airlines committed to connecting the world. By combining our strengths, we are creating a seamless bridge between India’s vibrant destinations and Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes. This partnership underscores Air India’s ambition to expand our global reach while offering Icelandair’s customers seamless access to India’s diverse destinations,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO & Managing Director, Air India.

“This strategic partnership with Air India marks a significant milestone, opening up exciting new travel opportunities from across our network in North America and Europe to and from India,” said Bogi Nils Bogason, President and CEO of Icelandair.

“It will connect Iceland to Air India’s extensive network, allowing us to introduce what Iceland has to offer to their customers. We have and will continue to expand our network of partner airlines, focusing on working with airlines like Air India that offer great service and connectivity.”

Separately, Air India has expanded its existing agreement with Air Mauritius, strengthening ties with the Indian Ocean nation and improving access to neighbouring regions such as Réunion, South Africa, and Madagascar. This renewed collaboration will see both airlines code on a total of 17 routes.

Air India will add its designator code to Air Mauritius-operated flights serving Cape Town, Johannesburg and Antananarivo, in addition to its current codeshare on Mauritius–India routes via Mumbai and Delhi.

Air Mauritius, meanwhile, will now place its ‘MK’ code on Air India services between Mauritius and Mumbai, adding to its existing codeshares on domestic Indian routes from Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Goa.

“India is one of the largest tourism source markets for destinations in Southern Africa, including Mauritius and South Africa, as well as a strong trade partner to the region. This expanded codeshare partnership with Air Mauritius is another step toward widening our extended global network, which enables our customers to easily access these destinations,” said Wilson.

“Air Mauritius is pleased to expand its collaboration with Air India, offering our passengers connections to numerous destinations across India via Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. Travellers from India to Mauritius will not only experience the warmth of our multi-cultural society and the richness of our diverse local cuisine, but also enjoy the convenience of connecting to Réunion, South Africa, and Madagascar beyond with Air Mauritius,” said Kishore Beegoo, Chairman of Air Mauritius.
